Macchiato Monsters is a rules-light, slightly collaborative, old school roleplaying game. It is not a game about coffee.

Two years after the release of the Zero Edition, we come to you with a perfectly tuned engine for adventure, exploration and survival in all kinds of perilous dungeonverses, whether you're using published settings and adventures or create your own.

Key features:

  • Freeform characters: emulate a classic concept, or come up with something unique and help define the world.
  • Risk dice: a simple attrition mechanic for armour, gear, encounters, treasure, and story progression.
  • Flexible magic: invent your spells, and keep casting them as long as you have resources - and hit points - to fuel your magic.
  • One-roll combat rounds: no initiative, no battle maps, no quarter given.
  • Campaign tools: a panoply of tables and procedures to prep and improvise content.
  • A while lot of illustrations of monsters having coffee!

Design by Eric Nieudan.
Layout & Lasagne by Paolo Greco.
Art (some painted with actual coffee) by Russ Nicholson, Eric Nieudan, Guillaume Jentey,
Jonathan Newell, Luigi Castellani, John Grümph,
Luka Rejec, Clare Foley, Bronwin McIvor,
Didier Balicevic, Christopher Stanley, Jops. Editing by Fiona Maeve Geist.

This is great, I'm having a great time playing SOLO using Scarlet Heroes solo rules and the Tome of Adventure Design. I will eventually run this for others as well.

I have one rule question, about how grenades should work. They are listed as risk die for damage, with also a risk value for how many you still have on your 'belt'. What is the point in having a risk damage value if they also have a separate riskdie for quantity? I understand that after a grenade goes off: kaboom - no more grenade. And I also understand that I could pair grenades with optional powder weapons rules (double damage etc). But, if that grenade exploded, no point in the risk dice stepping down, even if I roll a 1-3 for damage, since next grenade would be a new one from the belt, either way.

Am I missing something?

Ooh! I know this one! Treat it like the unreliable black powder weapon rule, except instead of stepping the risk die down when you roll a 1-3 for a dirty barrel, the grenade just wouldn't go off, it was a dud (GM discretion on whether it can be repaired or not). Hopefully this helps! I know it's a few months after you asked, but I'm hoping this gets to you.

Does this game have anything like a System Resource Document, or free Basic Rules sheet?

Hi, I really enjoyed reading your game and I am about to give it a try with my group. There is one thing that I have not found in the book. What does i.e. [weapon] d8/d8 mean?

Also I am looking for some examples for playing it. Can you recommend any videos or texts?

Glad you're liking Macchiato Monsters!

I haven't watched a lot of actual play, but this one (running one of my fave B/X modules) is good fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVkI10yaNVA&t=2s

When a weapon has two damage values, the first one is for one-handed use, the second for two-handed.

And working on monsters this afternoon, I realise that you may have been asking about monster stats? If a monster says something along the lines of: sword d8/d8, it simply means it has two attacks. Sorry if my previous answer was confusing!

I have a question on traits. How do you write a trait? How many words? Do Goblin Chef considered as 1 trait?

It's up to the referee really. I personally don't let players combine a species and an occupation, so I'd have them choose between Goblin and Chef. This is because I tend to be generous on racial features, so it wouldn't be fair to people who have just taken Ranger or Accountant. Also, it makes non-human characters more rare and special, which is the way I like my dungeonverse.

A lot of people don't mind that, so as long as it is clear for everyone at the table, and you don't mind parties of weirdo humanoid characters, have fun with it!

Hey Charles,

MM is largely due its resources webpage, but in the meantime, I've put the character sheet here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/7kixztx4i45u91u/AABJwqMySCPg9XO_v-55yaaua?dl=0

If you play on Roll20, you can also create a Macchiato Monsters campaign there.

Hi Wayne, you should log onto lasagna.social. It's Paolo's mini social network and a lot of us friends of Lost Pages gather there. Otherwise, I am @surcapitaine on Twitter. Happy to brainstorm alchemist concepts with you at any time!

I have two comments:

First on p.7 you say "reroll your hit points instead" - I'm not sure what the "instead" refers to and suspect it just needs to be deleted. On that note - what if you increase your HD and roll fewer HP than before - does that just stand?

Second - I was initially not expecting much from this and then I saw the initial equipment / wealth rolling system and was blown away that it was just as cool as Into the Odd and then I saw how money and treasure work and just goggled in amazement. I haven't gotten through the rest of this slim volume yet but now I expect to be blown away every page or two...no pressure.

Hope you were blown away at least a couple more times! ;)

Thanks for the kind words and the feedback - you're right about that _instead_, it should be cut. My own rule is that you can never have fewer HP when you roll your hit dice again, but you may run into a mean referee who will make you keep the lower total (in which case I advise spitting in their coffee ;)

Big fan of Macchiato Monsters since the Zero edition. For me it's got the right combination of random tables, useful rules, and open spaces to encourage more free-form play. I played a game with the designer and it was fast, fun and easy - just what I wanted. Great for convention games, short-form campaigns, or beginners just starting out. Recommended!

Per Paolo and Eric on G+, they will be sending out links or something to MM Zero purchasers. I paid the six because IMO the old four bucks plus six here, ten bucks total is a bargain.

This new edition is beautiful. The game is a really top-notch hybrid of what the author likes best of Whitehack and The Black Hack with other stuff in there too. I've been using the "secret beta" document for a year or so, and this is my favorite game bar none right now. If you like OSR with very streamlined, but in no way bare, rules, you should get this. The art is great, full of character, and the layout is totally pro -- clean and simple without being boring. This is a game that would be written by a computer with an artful soul and a sense of humor. GET THIS NOW, OSR FANS.

I don't know where the cover is, though! No cover page on the PDF!!!

I will post a proper review when time permits.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
