Why A Playtest

Heyyo!  Thanks for downloading the playtest version of DIY RPG Rules!

So why a playtest?  Truthfully, I just do not have the bandwidth to run many games anymore… and I want to take some time to work out any kinks, issues or whatever that I may not have thought of while writing this thing.  Also, it’s great to get the perspective of others and see things differently, so insert forest for the tree colloquialism here.

This is a no-frills document and not pretty to look at and I apologize for that.  I didn’t see the point going crazy with doing layout when I’m still shifting and tweaking (and sometimes crying… but that’s only at night and under my bed, so whatever!).

Once this book is complete, it will be released under OGL with an SRD and word document for ease of use and hacking on my blog.  There will be a free PDF edition (no art) and one that I make all purdy and put up for sale.

So please if you have any constructive feedback on the rules, I would love to hear them.  When the document is completed and put up for sale, if you have sent in constructive feedback, your name and those of all your players that participated (please email me those as well), will be added to a Playtester Page in the book.

Thank you so much for reading this and I hope you enjoy!

Caught this being talked about on the Spellburn podcast and had to download it. I have to say I love the concept. Simple rules, great take on learning abilities through adventure, and the meat grinder characters that can be used in any rule system.
If D&D, DCC RPG, and Savage Worlds had a three way, this would be it's offspring.
I look forward to the adventures and the full game being released. Great work, keep it up!

Absolutely love the audacious simplicity of the thing. It keeps character sheet design light enough to have everything in one sheet. Minimal modifiers (odd +1 in guns here) makes playing out combat fast. Some additional appendix on weird but common stuff would be cool: such as combat on horseback/precarious positions or chase mechanics (like 5e DMG, I think that one is done well), dueling, these are the ones on top of my head.

Also hackable friendly. It's one of the view engines that I don't have to fight with to make it work for my own custom game.

Thanks so much! I will have some chase rules in the final document. They are something I've used in Starrunner Kit and Barbarians of the Ruined Earth (coming out soon!).

For mounted combat- you suffer Disadvantage to your roll to attack (pg 29) and there are combat trained horses in the equipment section that negate that hurdle. :)

Not a single word about what it is, only about yourself. Not a good sign, to start with. Peace!

The meatgrinder lol. I dig this... What every developer is thinking about is this good, it's all good. Here's why. All games break down into rules light v heavy, it's rules after all... <br>
My system strives toward an even medium but both apply random v preplanned. Random is appropo for down and dirty anything can happen smash um ups like cyberpunk or twilight 2000. For preplanned look at cthluhu or master system. When you set the mood you don't want to have to go back to the city to mend a broken limb because it interrupts the tempo/tone of the game. A rules heavy game with lots of randomness with tables works! I'd like to see where the meat grinder goes...

Thank you :) I will be releasing a bunch of Meat Grinder adventures specifically for running on the fly/at cons or one-shots. As well as logos and helpful advise for people to publish their own.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
