Lightmaster Core Rulebook

Lightmaster is a game of pulp fantasy where you can loot ancient tombs, sail your flying ship to the moon, and engage undead Martians with flintlock, sword, and spells.

With its skill and level based characters, detailed combat involving critical strikes and specific injuries, and extensive path based magic system, Lightmaster is a retro-clone of a popular role-playing game from the 1980s. The game greatly streamlines and tunes the mechanics found in its source game, while providing a familiar feel. However, you don’t need to have played that game in order to play Lightmaster – the game can be enjoyed on its own merits.

Important Note

To play Lightmaster, you will need more than just this book. You will need both the Lightmaster Core Rulebook (this book) and the Lightmaster Book of Tables in order to play the game.

Given the recent rebellion against the OGL, any chance of releasing an "de-OGL'ed version", which might include the name of the masterful role playing game it's based on ;)

Just bought the books, super interesting system! I was just wondering, are there any guidelines for creating new 'extras' or monsters, or are there supplements to those included in the core book?

Hey Blacky,

I just wanted to say, I love what you did with Lightmaster. I would love some more support for it, though I imagine that's not in your design goals. But I do have some questions and hopefully you can answer them?

1) I noticed that starting characters don't get adolescent ranks, but only get to spend them once. Is this an intentional power reduction?
2) I also noticed we don't have class level bonuses anymore. Personally, I am a big fan. Would adopting them from B,G, &G be unbalancings?
3) I do like the default setting, but I can't just play humans! How would you add non-human races as pcs into the system? I was thinking of just dividing racial bonuses by 10 and giving their stat mod a change from that.
4) I noticed the classes do not have the same number of development points. I assume this is intentional. But being the case, how would you convert or create a new class? Do you have any guidelines/recommendations?

Hello, I have a great love of a particular game (lets call is RM) but of course has not produced anything for years. 5E on the other hand produces material like lemmings. I find your material a fascinating bridge between the two. I am planning on using your Lightmaser books as a conversion engine for 5E to add more grit and realism.

Is there a Forum dedicated to the game? Just to share fan-made content: adventures, settings, house rules, opinions and ideas. I'm asking because I will like to present the game at my local game store but I need pre made one shots and characters....

I'm starting a campaign soon using this rule system, and i found a couple of inconsistencies within the rules, i would be glad if you could clear them.
1) In the equipment chapter you can buy bolts for a crossbow, and some extras wield them, but there is no weapon skill for them, and no weapon table.
2) The example character on page 60 has a total toughness bonus of +4, but 30 hit points.

I also noticed the hitpoint thing. My guess is that they forgot to include an additional step for calculating base HP as in their prior game: Blood, Guts, and Glory

For those who own/read both books would you say that "Lightmaster" is an evolution/refinement of "Blood, Guts and Glory"?

This is exactly how it's described by it's creator in this blog

There are any alternate way of generate characteristics?

Does the usual 4d6 and drop the lowest dice work?

Can I use supplements for the source game with this? Would there be any conversion involved?

In the foreword, it says this:

"Welcome to Lightmaster! This game is a retro-clone of a particular edition of a popular role-playing game from the late 1980s. Unfortunately, for legal reasons that game can’t be named here, [but if you check out the attack tables and critical hit tables in the back of the book] it should be obvious which set of rules this game emulates."

Which leads me to believe that the author originally intended the tables and charts to be in the same book as the core rules.

Looking forward to this hitting p.o.d
I will be getting hold of both books.
Be great to see it in a complete volume but
is a cool putting the tables in a separate one.

I really would've have preferred if both PDFs (The Book of Tables especially) included bookmarks (Like Dark Dungeons did). But the game is so polished and high-quality I have no authority to complain, lol.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
