Horrific Adventures in the Gothic Countryside

Tucked away in a forgotten corner of the Austro-Hungarian Empire lies the County of Wystdovja. A gaslight era setting for the Call of Cthulhu RPG. Far from Victorian London, Wystdovja presents a remote countryside more akin to Gothic tales of horror fiction. Dark castles, creeping marshlands, isolated noble estates, superstitious villages, haunted forests, and lonely railway stations connect far-distant points of civilization.

The Wystdovja Vale Gazetteer provides Investigators and Keepers alike, with all the information they need to jumpstart a campaign in the Wystdovja River Valley, including overviews of the valley’s history, government, cities, townships, geographic features, noble estates, rumors, legends, maps, and more.

Includes

  • Decades of fun with a good group of friends
  • A Complete 40 page pdf Gazetteer of the Wystdovja Vale (Can be printed in booklet form, and used as reference at your game table while exploring the Vale)
  • A pdf map of Wystdovja (suitable for printing at large size)
  • pdf maps of the Wystdovja Vale, the City of Skeltzenberg, and the township of Middenport (all suitable for printing, or usable with most online tabletops)

This is a a great setting! I'm incorporating it in my next session as my group is taking an extended vacation from London for a visit with The Torchlight society. As I ponder over the Map of Wystdovja, I noticed there is not a scale of distance and the vale looks smaller than what the travel times matrix suggest, so I'm thinking of halving the coach times and cutting rail time by a third. The distance between Skeltzenberg Station and Middenport Station can't be more than 10-15 miles apart, right?

Most definitely! I'm working on the next adventure now, as well as smaller guidebooks for each of the primary factions like the Torchlight Society, and the Order of St. Krogan!

This is a fine setting with many good ideas. It may profit from a German speaking proofreader (a female "Edler" is a "Edle", not an "Edlerin", "Kaiser" is a title, never a name [call the guy Karl of Kasimir, if you like the "K] and Captain Duncan Longmeadow is a Scotsman: his Austrian colleague is called "Dieter Langwiese"). But those are triffles, and some of the names are quite scenic. Please note that I speak none of the local languages: Ccroatian, maybe Serbian, Rom and Akklo would be obvious further language checks. If the setting sees some development by the various scenarios that seem to be in progress, a 2nd edition might be even more interesting.

Harald, As I was working on the setting I was concerned some of the names might sound off, and as I move forward I will definitely tidy things up with some revisions.
Actually, I have a google doc going where I'm keeping tabs on any fixes, and will go through it anytime I do an update to the pdf.

I have about 6-12 adventures sketched out, and the Gazetteer lays the groundwork for some of what I have planned. My goal with the Gazetteer is mainly to provide Investigators at the game table with a quick-reference to the various locations throughout Wystdovja. Since most players don't like to read long excerpts, I wanted to keep the entries brief while at the same time dropping in some flavorful tidbits and rumors.

Thank you for taking the time to give me your feedback, it's much appreciated!

So having read and enjoyed the gazetteer I can say that I found the fact that some of the names were German-ish, some Slavic-ish, and some England-ish wasn't a problem for me because it feels like my (minimal) experience with Hammer Horror. It could easily be explained in the fiction by having the region have various competing powers and cultural influences.

I honestly wouldn't have seen this as a problem if I hadn't read this comment. But it did get me thinking that I'd like some table to generate names for locations and people. (look at Ironsworn for a great example). Alternately a least a big list of appropriate names that I could grab in a pinch. This is something that I would need to source elsewhere to play this appropriately.

Getting a little closer to a review in some ways, it has been a very long time since I've run COC, but I felt like this was a colorful and flavorful glimpse of a setting. But only just a glimpse. I couldn't really run a game in this (certainly not as a...See more

Thank you for the feedback. Actually, once I build up a little more content for the gazetteer I will do an update to the download; Maybe add a chart of potential NPC names, and perhaps some details on economy, costume details, and perhaps some short adventure seeds to get people rolling.

In regards to the list of recommended movies, I opted to include that with each of the individual adventures for Wystdovja (There is a list of Inspired Media for Kiss of Blood, on page-15 of that product; https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/327247/Cthulhu-Dreadfuls-Presents-1--Kiss-of-Blood). I opted to associate this with each adventure, so it could be tailored specifically to that story... ie. If you take on a nest of blood-thirsty vampires, the inspired media section will have a vampire theme.

I have currently only completed the Gazetteer, and Kiss of Blood, but I am working on the next couple adventures in the series, and am hoping to drop them here in the near future.

All in all, great...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
