Dead Scare

DEAD SCARE is a tabletop roleplaying game by women, about women and children killing zombies in McCarthy-era America. It's based on Apocalypse World by Vincent Baker, and combines subverted 1950s American idealism with a blood-spattered zombie apocalypse.

It began when President Truman was the first public target of a Russian bio-weapon the Russkies designed to turn people into flesh-eating zombies. Everyone watched it on TV that night, and nothing in the good ol' US of A will be the same ever again.

How will you defend yourself when the shambling dead break down your white picket fence?

If your husband is a cop, there's a revolver in your nightstand. What do you do when your husband isn't a cop and your nightstand is empty?

Your ad man or professor husband sure provided for you before, but what are you going to do now that it's just you and the kids and something wants in?

There are weapons all around you, you just never thought about your household goods that way.

Your knitting needles are spears.

Your kitchen knives are good for more than slicing chicken. Though you probably don't want zombie meat for your casserole or hotdish.

Even that old vacuum can find new life as a zombie killing death dealer.

And the kids? They're not powerless either.

Junior's finally going to have a use for all that batting practice.

Little Sally's jump rope can make a zombie snare.

You're all in this together.

Defend yourselves.
Fight back.
Don't give up.

Adding a bookmark or Table of Contents heading for the Playbooks would be a good idea. It took me ages to find them and I was starting to think they were just missing somehow. Other than that, great concept, fun (for certain values of fun -- it's understandably dark, given how awful the 50s were for everyone who wasn't an adult, able-bodied, neurotypical, cishet white man and then having zombies dumped on top of that) content, all around nice.

The role of trans people at this point in US history is... interesting. It was just starting to emerge... but the concept was fairly new to the US and it'd be a while yet before there was a clear and definite distinction between trans people and crossdressers, even within their communities. (The word "transsexual" first entered English in 1949, "transgender" in the mid 1960s)

I... admit I'm a little disappointed that this didn't get any time in the book, but there's a lot to cover and this is (not accidentally) a fairly arcane topic. (Even I had to look up a bit to correct my original version of the post, and I'm actually trans)

Hey everybody.

My wife and I were really excited about this game when we first heard about it. She was planning on DMing for her first time and we thought that this would be perfect given that I (as a youngish white male) would have no idea how to DM this particular setting.

We were both extreamly disappointed with the end result and I would like to discuss getting a refund.

I don't want to trash the work publicly so please let me know how I can contact you to get this resolved.

Thanks, ladies, for the ambiguously unpleasant to outright hostile replies to my sincere question. So, allow me to rephrase:

Is your 2017 game inspired by another that was announced in 2015 but didn't (as yet) release, thereby making the latter a perfect target to shamelessly rip off?

--

If it's simply a matter of convergent evolution, awesome. And the game sounds delightful, hence me asking about its source of potential inspiration. But a recommendation: thin skin should really only apply to the zombies.

DEAD SCARE was conceived before Aberford. We became aware of Aberford while our Kickstarter was going on. We reached out to their dev team to see about cross-promoting, but we never heard back. The two projects are wholly unrelated, otherwise.

Thank you for the reply!

I was completely oblivious to the Kickstarter (which should be obvious by this point), and did some digging. So, convergent evolution it is!

In the spirit of mending fences, I just bought the PDF. Any chance of it going to POD at some point?

Sorry for the knocking noses out of joint, ladies.

Except this one was developed earlier, has a different premise and focus.... and got funded.

Is this a tribute to 'Aberford', the as-unreleased computer game about, well, everything you described?

How could you make a tribute to a game that was never released and was announced after yours was in development? Time travel shenanigans?

Wow this un-released computer game seems to have been inspired by Dead Scare.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
