FirstFable

FirstFable is a simple, elegant game designed to help adult gamers introduce young players to the joys of roleplaying. Appropriate for players as young as 6 years old, FirstFable was designed by professionals in both game design and education, and is available, free of charge, to anyone who wishes to use it.

This is the Guide Book for the game, primarily intended for parents. Each child playing First Fable uses one of the Character Books designed as both a characer sheet, activity book and adventure log. All of the First Fable titles, including the Character Books can be found here. All are available for free download and modestly priced in print.

Grab some dice and some pencils, and start crafting your own FirstFable!

First Fable is released under Creative Commons. Download the game for more information.

Roll20 is the parent company behind DriveThru Sites. We sponsored the creation of FirstFable and released in under Creative Commons both to give something back to the hobby that we love and also because we felt that there weren't enough roleplaying games truly engineered with younger kids in mind.

After we started work on FirstFable, some other great games for kids have been released: titles like Hero Kids by Justin Halliday and Eric Quigley (a kids game that uses a tabletop map and minis approach which many kids may prefer over the theatre-of-the-mind approach used in FirstFable) and many more family-friendly titles.

Find the game that's right for your kids and roll some dice together!

OneBookShelf, Inc... Please can you address the allegations against the writer of this RPG, Matt McFarland? What is your relationship to the author? What is your stance regarding the allegations against him?

Just because the title is free doesn't mean it's clean.

Please respond.

OneBookShelf contracted McFarland prior to our being aware of any allegation (this title was created and released many years ago, the "date added" above is only for this listing of the title and is not the original release). It was a flat fee arrangement since the book was always intended to be free and would not generate any ongoing sales so a royalty made no sense.

I wish someone had warned me about this game's author situation before I downloaded it: Matt McFarland is being accused of several things, including child rape so… I won't be playing FirstFable with my kids.

I'm confused. The post that Nicolas links to contains some unsubstantiated allegations about MacFarland and his wife, and lots of discussion about how bad a game was that he wrote.

The post seems to be written by a "tolerant" right winger, someone who appears sympathetic to the idea that the gaming world is left-leaning, but with numerous snide comments about the left. The comments section seems to take the same stance.

My confusion is that the linked post appears to be a hatchet job, thin on facts, heavy on speculation, and mostly, just critical of one of the games MacFarland wrote.

I'm not convinced. This seems spurious to me.

Lastly, Nicolas hasn't made it clear what his own stance is.

Digging around a bit more, it seems there are numerous allegations against McFarland.

Here's a thread with references to some of the accusations:

While nothing is conclusive, and most of it is speculative, one thing stands out... McFarland closed his publishing company down as a result of the allegations.

I just stumbled on this controversy while looking for something to play with my six year old. While the allegations against McFarland are awful (and he appears to have now admitted them), at the end of the day, this work was the vision of another company and he was contracted as a freelancer writer.

There is no evidence that OneBookShelf knew of the allegations prior to contracting McFarland and that he does not benefit from ongoing interest in this product.

Due to the above, I don't see any reason to boycott FirstFable. I won't be, it seems like a nice idea and clearly other people were also involved to make this very child friendly. McFarland appear to have been punished for what has happened in the past and his involvement in this product is is/was limited.

Of course others will disagree with me on this (which they are entitled to), but if anyone else stumbles into this hornets nest and is unsure how to feel/what to do, then I feel it is good to have a diverse range of...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
