Cosmic Adventure in the Post-Historical Age

In the last centuries of the Fifth Cycliad, a great malaise began to descend on the lands of humankind. The great civilisations of the Earth, which for aeons had seemed on the verge of slumber, now finally began to rot from within. From the edges of the world, the ever-present enemies drew close, their hungry claws poised to tear apart the delicate flesh of a fruit a hundred millennia in the ripening. And all around, a cry arose for Heroes, to stand against the dying of the light, and save the world from the sins of its past.

The Swallower of Souls is the Quickstart Rules and Introductory Adventure for the The Chronicles of Future Earth Kickstarter, the brand new cosmic fantasy roleplaying game from Mindjammer Press. Set in the far, far future of our planet Earth, it's a game of sorcery and demons, of fallen civilisations and ancient technologies, of monsters and mysteries and mind-shattering dimensions. This Quickstart provides everything you need to play - a modified version of the Fate Core rules, specially tailored for cosmic fantasy roleplaying, six pregenerated characters, and an action-packed adventure in the Eternal City of Kados, spanning one or two sessions of play. We hope you'll join us and help us produce this brand-new game line!

Some said it was the end of days. Some said it was only the beginning. These adventures tell the history of that time yet to come. These are the Chronicles of Future Earth...

Is this a standalone system or using the Chaosium Basic Roleplaying ruleset?

Got the BRP version when it came out.

Great work, Sarah. Crunchy stuff indeed.

Will the future supplements be compatible with BRP (ok, kind of a silly question when we’re talking about an atlas... but other supplements are... intriguing...

As a [as yet, very small] publisher, I am not allowed to post a review…but I can leave comments that are the same as a review in this Discussion area. So…

This free 59 page quickstart is produced by Mindjammer Press, the home of the sci-fi Mindjammer RPG and the English version of the fantasy Capharnaum — The Tales Of The Dragon-marked RPG. It kicks off the rebooting of the Chronicles of Future Earth, a universe that has been bubbling from the innovative mind of Sarah Newton for over twenty years. The introductory first edition came out in 2010, but the creator has been expanding it in her mind and notes, and is ready to roll out a loooonnnnnggg line of future source books, regional gazettes, an atlas, a Chronicles companion, along with two or three major adventure campaigns being presently designed (with one being a follow up to the secrets discovered within the Swallower of Souls), and more, with a novel already out.

The Chronicles are set one hundred thousand years in the future,...See more

SOOOO happy to see this at last reborn, though sad it ended up going to FATE (not a huge fan) rather than Mythras. Any chance on some conversion notes for those of us who go back to the BRP edition?

Hi Greg,

We're certainly looking into all possibilities - right now BRP seems *extremely* well served with the fab new RuneQuest - but it's possible that Chronicles and BRP may intersect again at some point. However - have a look at some of our actual play sessions online, the new Chronicles of Future Earth has inherited a lot of its gameplay DNA from BRP, and is a crunchy and tactical incarnation of Fate Core in which I hope all of us "Old Chroniclers" will feel right at home!

Cheers,

Sarah

Sounds good Sarah. And yes, the new RQ is amazing, but in part because Glorantha is now firmly backed back in. I will absolutely look at the some of the play sessions!

I bought Chronicles of Future Earth for Basic Roleplaying from Chaosium years ago. It's pretty great. Sad, intriguing, well-written. Very interested to read this.

Thank you, Andrew! We're running a Kickstarter campaign for the new Chronicles of Future Earth RPG right now, if you're interested. As one of the "original Chroniclers", it's a massive expansion of the setting - the "full treatment". I hope you enjoy The Swallower of Souls! :)
Best,
Sarah

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
