Vampire: the Masquerade 5th Edition

Vampire: The Masquerade is the original and ultimate roleplaying game of personal and political horror. You are a vampire, struggling for survival, supremacy, and your own fading humanity — afraid of what you are capable of, and fearful of the inhuman conspiracies that surround you.

The classic that changed roleplaying games forever returns! This fifth edition features a streamlined and modern rules design, beautiful new full-color art, and a rich story experience for players. Powered by the innovative Hunger cycle, the game also includes rules for creating system supported character coteries, Loresheets to directly involve players with their favorite parts of the setting and The Memoriam, a new way to bring the character's detailed backgrounds and expand on them in-session.

V5 is a return to Vampire's original vision, moving boldly into the 21st century. While the rules have been redesigned, this new edition honors the deep story of the original, advancing the metaplot from where it left off and detailing exactly what has happened in the world of the Kindred up until tonight. The terror of the Second Inquisition, the conspiracies behind the Gehenna War, and the rekindling of the War of Ages: these are the building blocks of the modern V5 chronicle.

Mature Warning: Contains graphic and written content of a mature nature, including violence, sexual themes, and strong language. Reader discretion is advised.

**Note: Vampire: the Masquerade 5th Edition has not been unlocked for the Storytellers Vault community content program. No art or text from 5th Edition May be used in community content projects.**

This PDF version of the V5 core book contains everything the physical book does, plus the implemented errata and a few bonus sections. These sections comprise 26 pages of added bonus material, and they include the following:
  • More Loresheets: Descendant of Tyler, Descendant of Zelios, Descendant of Vasantasena, High Clan, Low Clan, Ambrus Maropis, Carmelita Neillson, Fiorenza Savona, Descendant of Karl Schrekt, Descendant of Xaviar.
  • An Appendix on Standard Feats: A list of examples for various typical feats your character may do over their unlife, divided among Mental, Physical, and Social.
  • An Appendix on Projects: Advanced rules with which your character can attempt long-term projects in order to accomplish goals that go beyond their night-to-night unlife.
  • An Appendix on Considerate Play: Excellent advice on how to present complex topics in your game and to ensure everyone at the gaming table is having a good time.

Hi, Renegade just released the V5 core book in print with the corrected/updated errata today; does anyone know if the pdf here will likewise be updated by Renegade?

Does anyone know if the hardcopy and/or pdf of V5 sold here has been updated as per the adjustments brought in by the V5 companion? I was a Kickstarter supporter right from the beginning of V5 and I feel thoroughly dudded that we were never emailed an updated edition with these changes. I can't believe I have to buy a new copy of the book to get all the rules in one in place.

I too am curious if this is updated with the Companion's errata yet.

So apparently it's not. The new print that paradox is doing will be though.

So I purchased this on the official WOD digital storefront before it shut down and before it appeared here. Am I going to have to repurchase it here to get the updates? It is rather annoying that after purchasing the game from the, at the time, official source only to have it completely vanish and be expected to purchase it again to get the more complete product. I had sent a message on the contact form that the website had put up before it was nuked and never got a reply there so I'm not expecting a great answer especially given how the line has been managed. Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth like I got taken for a ride because of my early support.

There hasn’t been any significant updates of note. The copy you have is most likely as up to date as everybody else’s. It was the Camarilla book (and possibly Anarch book) that were updated.

What about the bonus sections as noted in the product description on this page?

My copy was automatically updated from the Modiphius site, to be sure. If you contacted through White Wolf, then it may be possible to contact Paradox now. If you didn't get them, they amount to a few essays in appendices in the back - more clarifications than new rules as such.

Tried multiple times, unless I am missing the right link/email to contact, that is why I complained here. But I mean, I got it just before the subscription service to get the older books was started (then canceled); so yeah, little help? Not trying to be a problem, but all this corporate action seems to have lost me in the shuffle.

Yes there have. Disciplines have been changed and there are significant changes to blood potency in the V5 companion.
Customer avatar
Rory H July 10, 2021 7:00 pm UTC
At the time of replying, the rules changes in Vampire Companion hadn’t been released yet. That (free) supplement introduced a replacement table for using blood potency and clarified other rules in general play.

I'll probably just buy the bundle, it seems to be a good enough deal to justify the rebuy. But it is concerning how much the IP has seemingly bounced around.

I just decided to look at V5's discussion and review board and it's such a mess. This book came out almost 3 years now, and it's just sad to see it still in a heated edition war. I get why the "V20 vs. V5" is a thing, there both extremely different in tone, focus, and mechanics. (there almost night and day)
V5 is way more focused on group narration/storytelling in the over all lore (not metaplots) and making "The blood of Cain" an actual threat that causes more horror and problems for players.
V20 is more focused on metaplots and making kindred more powerful and in control.

over all, I think the butthurt for this edition war comes more from how V5 gos back to the roots and try to be a "hard driven horror" that is trying to rebalance, and streamline the wild growth of V20 discipline/powers, and mechanics. (Thank god)
V20 is the opposite! It's more about giving players a lot of power and control over there curse.

Both of them are not "BAD"...See more

Random question. I haven't played the game since the old days of 2nd edition so my lore is definitely lacking but I noticed there is little mention of the other lines from this period, Werewolf, Mage, Changeling etc. There didn't seem to be much mention in this book either.

Are there equivalent rulebooks for these lines (I'm most interested in Werewolf)? Possibly they were all wiped out in the various apocalypses, as I said my lore is largely outdated?
Customer avatar
Rory H September 26, 2020 3:29 am UTC
A new edition of Werewolf: The Apocalypse is being developed by Hunters Entertainment, and is set for release in 2021.
Customer avatar
Steve R September 26, 2020 11:26 am UTC
Thanks Rory, that's good news!

I'm also curious, and showing my age here, is the oncoming end of the world still a thing for this line (sounds like it might be if Werewolf still has apocalypse in the title) or has this been averted/resolved?
Customer avatar
Rory H October 20, 2020 5:56 pm UTC
The game has certainly moved on from the old meta-plot. There is a sense of vampire organizations losing their grip in V5, along with an ominous sense of doom, but the actual end outcome is not clear. In the case of Werewolf, we will have to wait and see.

Not too sure listing neo-Nazis in 2020 as a character arch-type is anything other than irresponsible and massive stupid in 2020. Especially listing them as a suggested arch-type for Brujah. Because you know the one thing fascists and Nazis are known for is being non-conformist anti-authoritarian anarchists. Not sure what the writer is trying to say or prove by including neo-Nazis in such a way, but presenting them as an arch-type for a clan of scholars and anarchists is the height of stupidity. I'd be less willing to chuck this in a trash heap had they been listed under the Tremere (b/c like 40% of Nazis are occultist dorks) or the Ventrue (the uh... actual fascists of VTM).

When a game designer is listing certain arch-types as inspiration for a PC, they're making a very specific statement. I can't believe this made it through editing and is in the PDF I paid for.

So anyway

Have fun playing a nazi brujah

The suggestion of having antisocial or villainous archetypes as members of any Clan has always been there. There was an example of this in the Skinhead pregen used in the 1st edition of the Brujah Clan book. Just because example characters like this are given, as in any fiction, does not mean the writers endorse these views.
Customer avatar
Yanuel M April 13, 2021 11:25 pm UTC
I mean, the Brujah were a part of the Camarilla for 500 years. Not all Brujahs for sure, but a good chunk of them were, and there are still one or two in there. Lots of neo-nazis and even original nazis likened themselves to anarchists (for as long as its useful to them), because their rhetoric is that “insert minority group here” is actually running things and wants to destroy you.

We know that they are actually just fascistic authoritarians that seek to take down less oppressive governing structures to impose their own highly oppressive and genocidal ones. I can see plenty of Brujahs that see Barons and Princes as too permissive towards “insert minority group here” and will fight to take down those structures that “coddles” “insert minority group here” so they can enact one that gives them freedom to hunt down “insert minority group here”.

Dude, you are playing a *monster that kills people*!. If you can't deal with adult themes try D and D. The game is an exploration of good and evil. Not everything has to be able politic hey.

Whatever happened to Goodwin's Law? This is why we aren't allowed to have nice things anymore.

Bought it from the official WOD digital storefront before it shut down.

This book is messy in the best and worse ways, it shakes up the clans we've known due to the even of the masquerade "Slipping" in the early 00s and other events . It seeming delays/stops gehenna.

Steer clear of this version of the World of Darkness, it's watered down simplified and absolutely lacking in content. Even newer content they have changed the known history of the WoD, not to mention getting rid of clans by clumping them into one clan, and getting rid of unique disciplines. Stick with Vampire 20th if you truly want to see what the world of darkness has to offer not this diluted and fairly poorly written edition.

Rory H January 29, 2020 8:11 am UTC
I’d be steering clear of opinions that are merely engaging in edition warring, personally.

It is incorrect to say that any Clans have been gotten rid of, or that they have been clumped together. They have merely introduced the core seven Clans from the original game in the core rules. They others are/will be detailed in other supplements, with the suggestion that they will be gathered together in the upcoming Players’ Guide. Disciplines have been consolidated in some cases, but some of the ‘unique disciplines’ you refer to were only introduced in supplements and later editions, were often contrived and narrow in application. The core game runs smoother than it did before.

The writers of this book were: Kenneth Hite, Martin Ericsson, Matthew Dawkins, Karim Muammar, and Juhana Pettersson, with additional writing by Mark Rein•Hagen, Karl Bergström, Jason Andrew, Freja Gyldenstrøm, Jacqueline Bryk and Neil Gaiman. I think their previous credits speak for themselves in terms...See more

Officially they have clumped all of the Assamites' Caste into the monolithic Baqu Haqium and cut Dur-An-Ki's several unique paths into general blood sorcery. Also they Samedi have split themselves with some joining the ministry (aka Set's new label). Then there is the fact several clans ( Giovanni, Cappadocian & Nagaraja as well as members of the Samedi) who became the Hecata. All in all meaning yes there is clans that are both gotten rid of and clumped together.
Customer avatar
Rory H April 10, 2020 1:06 pm UTC
All of the Assamites Caste were already ‘clumped’ into the Assamites Clan in previous editions. All sorcerous magic are now organized into blood sorcery as a means of streamlining the rules - it has nothing to do with Paths. The Samedi are a rare bloodline, not a Clan, and only the Giovanni were considered a ‘Clan' in V20 as the Cappadocians and Nagaraaja were also considered bloodlines. Indeed, Cappadocians are more associated with the Dark Ages historical setting. The Hecata are an attempt to provide a common Clan for all these variations, but all will be expanded on in more detail than they have ever been done before in the upcoming Cults of the Blood Gods supplement.

Moreover, all of these Clans are detailed in supplements not the core book here. V20 attempted to collate a 20 year history of supplements all into a single book. V5 focuses on a single point and expands out with supplements. Seeing as we’ve only seen a few supplements so far it is difficult to assume that specific bloodlines...See more

I've been playing this version now for about 6 months. There's a few things to keep in mind about this edition of the game.

1) This is the newest edition of the game. White Wolf went bankrupt, and was sold off to Paradox. White Wolf was shuttered last year because it handled a real world situation very insensitively in the Camarilla source book. Despite what you might hear, this line is still very much alive; a new book, "Cults of the Blood Gods" was just announced today with a kickstarter campaign. The release schedule is somewhat slow though because Paradox is making sure the the insensitivity that caused the shuttering of White Wolf is not repeated. The metaplot though is moving things back towards the the original World of Darkness metaplot with the exception of the Antediluvians.

2) This is not the World of Darkness that you remember for the first 3 editions. This version is riding the wave of RPG style that is popular in the Scandinavian countries, which...See more

For me, as someone who was around to buy the 1st Edition when it first came out in 1991, this game is very much in line with the original intent. It’s why the brought Mark Rein-Hagen back into the design team. The mechanics are just better designed to deliver the experience.

Also, White Wolf didn’t go bankrupt. They were merged with CCP in 2006 and then acquired by Pardox in 2015. White Wolf were dissolved as a management group, due to controversies, but then reformed as a Brand Management group to license other companies to produce games for their IP. Modiphius are the current licensed publishers of Vampire now.

Nice perspective though.

I would have preferred a version that is PG-13 in terms of graphics & images, instead of the over the top "Gother than Thou". Even a way to turn the art off in the PDF would be useful.
The lack of printable summary sheets for players is another nuisance.
Customer avatar
Jamie L December 19, 2019 10:56 pm UTC
Lars von Trier said, "Horror happens in your head". While the images are useful for setting the mood of the world. It doesn't work when printing because of the waste of ink. So the option to disable images would be useful and allow the book a wider reach, which is good for the company. So Seriously, YES! As I want the game to do more than just succeed but to increase its reach beyond a few.
I also pointed at the lack of player aids and cheatsheets is also a problem because you want this game to be as easy as possible to start playing and would allow a stronger focus on the horrific nature of the monsters you play.

There are summary sheets for certain things - like character generation - in the book. The ST Screen holds a number of the in-game charts and tables to use. If you want more, then these files might be useful to you (they aren’t mine):

Because while I suppose Edge Lording can be an art, doing it disguised as "art" is the equivalent of paying to look through the notebooks of an angsty teen who didn't get enough hugs or puppies?

Just a guess, but I can relate somewhat. In the parlance of the original, it screams "gratuitous poseur."

Death by wokeism.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
