Ryuutama: Neko Goblin Field Notes

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Ryuutama is an RPG developed in Japan by designer Atsuhiro Okada. It is set in a world where the "NPCs" of the village--the bakers, farmers, shopkeepers and healers--set off on a wonderful adventure exploring a fantasy world together. Some people colloquially call it "Hayao Miyazaki's Oregon Trail", because of its heartwarming (in Japanese "honobono") feel of family anime, and its focus on traveling and wonder over combat and treasure.

This supplement contains the following new additions to the Ryuutama RPG:

  • 6 New Classes
  • 3 New Types
  • New Physical and Magical Characteristics
  • New facilities
  • New Armor and weapons
  • "Guilds" mechanic
  • New school of magic

Can't leave a review even though I just bought it, but whatever.

There's some good material here. Unfortunately it's a pretty light book and much of it is recycled or reflavored from the core material. Some stuff could have benefitted from playtesting or an outside editor. (for example, the new item modifiers accidentally create several ways to get gear for free, and the shuriken is technically not a ranged weapon as written) Guilds are an interesting idea but the sample guilds are pretty dull, just giving a simple bonus and penalty in specific circumstances.

But there's a drought of Ryuutama content, and it seems like the official supplements are never going to be released in English, so I think this will be helpful to anyone running a long term game who wants to introduce some new character options, especially for when players start picking their second classes and types.

Hey, thanks for the review! We did playtest this pretty extensively although some things are sure to slip through the cracks. I'm really interested in how the item modifier can create several ways to get gear for free since this is the first time someone has brought that up! I really hope you enjoy the Classes the book has to offer.

Frail's cost modifier is 0. My group actually wasn't sure what the meaning of this was. Does it make the item cost 0 gold, not affect the price, or indicate that merchants won't bother buying or selling it? I'm realizing now that it doesn't say "x" 0, but it's still pretty confusing. I don't think there are any 0 modifiers to compare it to either.

Frowning is a flat -1000, so it seems like if someone wanted a frowning item that's already worth less than a thousand gold the price would be 0. I think all of the negative modifiers in the core book are multiplicative so that usually can't happen.

We actually went over it a bit to iron out any issues with content we were considering using, so I'm happy to organize that and send it along if that feedback would be helpful.

The classes are very cool! I didn't discover the book until after we were done with character creation and we're pretty far from multiclassing but Tamer caught my eye. I may also end up trying Night...See more

If you could forward any issues you have to rookiejetstudio@gmail.com that would be great since it will be a better avenue for us to carry out this conversation. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the other content!

Modifiers in the core book are multiplicative but for Frowning I figured with the kind of effect it carries would make sense to simply drop an items value by 1000. if the items value sits in the negatives you would essentially have to pay someone to take the item from you, try pairing this with higher cost items to give them a bit of a monkey paw.

I really love this little supplement! If you're looking for either Ryuutama content to add to your setting or want more traveler type options for your players I really recommend this. I'm not currently using any of the additional travelers, but my table loves the idea of the guild system. We've even added a couple of guilds to our setting. I don't regret burying this, plus it was only $3.99. Definitely worth it.
I'm going to implement some of the facilities so I can populate some of my towns with them. I also have a player that's going Defense type, so we'll see how that goes.
Worth picking up if you have the chance!

Great supplement! The classes alone made this worth it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
