THE ENDLESS LAIR

A Solo Fantasy Adventure
Compatible with First Edition and Most Retro-Clones
Intended for one player character of levels 1 to 3

You have heard tales of the maze which lies near Cùirn Dhubh.
Many enter seeking their fortunes within its halls; few make it out.
Will you tempt fate and test your mettle against the Endless Lair?

Hello and welcome, adventurers and Game Masters!

I am very excited to tell you about my first solo adventure module: The Endless Lair

In this module, you will take on the role of a worthy adventurer who has chosen to enter a world renowned stygian catacomb, to test your mettle against its challenges. Will you survive and return to boast of your exploits? Or will you fall, like so many would be heroes before you? Only the Gods can say!

The adventure takes place near the village of Cùirn Dhubh (Black Cairn in the Common Tongue), which lies along the southwestern border of the free nation of Dùn Bhriste. In the foothills within a half day’s ride of Cùirn Dhubh is a subterranean maze known far and wide as The Endless Lair. Some say it was the lair of an ancient necromancer while others claim it was home to a demon cult. No one knows its origins for certain, but the folk of Cùirn Dhubh know that hopefuls come from far and wide to test their mettle against the maze there.

Most who take up the maze’s challenge never return and those who do are tight lipped about their experiences. Despite this, the maze’s reputation is world renowned. Its name, The Endless Maze, is derived from tales of those few who survived their time in the maze, who claim the place is larger on the inside then seems possible and that there is a seemingly endless supply of foes in the rooms of the magical complex.

Therein lays its greatest challenge: the maze is so deadly because it is specifically ensorcelled such that all who seek to enter must do so alone!

Dare you challenge the maze alone, adventurer?

This supplement contains a completely original adventure, which is intended for a single player character of 1st to 3rd level. However, if a GM wishes to run this adventure with a group of 1st to 3rd level players, it is easily modified to fill that need. The module relies on random chance tables and given this random nature it may be replayed many times and still offer different results and encounters.

This module presents the player with deadly challenges and, true to Old School sensibilities, death will be the rule and not the exception in this maze. However, those brave souls who do survive can proudly claim they have bested The Endless Lair! You can play with any of the five pre-generated player characters provided, or your own character; and try again and again until you succeed!

As an added bonus, as a purchaser of one of my supplements you also get a free copy of my latest Starry Knight Press Catalog, which has information on all of my modules and supplements as well as maps of the known portions of the sphere of Terrans, where my campaign takes place.

Going out on a limb here and guessing MU1 stands for Magic User Level 1?
And that FTR stands for Fighter as well.

Correct! The abbreviation references the class and the number references the level. So for example, MU1 is a 1st Level Magic-User; FTR2 is a 2nd Level Fighter; and CL 1 is a 1st level Cleric. I hope this helps!

Google "OSRIC Referee Screen Charts". Espero que esto ayude.

Hi. I recently purchased this solo adventure, and I have a question (being new to the solo rpg hobby). The labyrinth map, on pg iii, has specxial symbols (ex: * with a circle around it, 'S', and "s" with a circle around it), yet no legend to say what they are. Am I missing something? I did find, and download, the OSRIC rules, but am not finding anything there either. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Hi Tina D!

First, thank you so much for the purchase, it is greatly appreciated!!

Second, getting to your question; that is a very good observation, I apologize for the confusion and I can clear it up and explain.

First to clear it up the confusion:
The * in a O denotes some form of statue.
An capital or small S (in or out of a circle) denotes a secret door.
A C denotes a concealed door.
A wavy line is a curtain.
Circles in a row (see room 27) indicate columns.
Dotted lines indicate a path that runs "under" another room/hallway.

Now to explain:
I relied on old school TTRPG map conventions and did not consider those newer (but oh so very welcome!!) to the hobby might not understand. I sometimes include a legend in my adventures, but sometimes don't because of said conventions. Given the audience for this one (everyone!!), I should have. That was my error. Thank you so very much for your input and because of...See more

Dear Trent S., I explained in the description that this adventure is based on random charts and I included a complete "quick preview" of the entire book specifically so folks could see what they are getting before buying it. As far as the map numbering, it was done as straight forward as it could be done, as is customary with most circuitous maps there is a bit of randomness. The nature of the map is specifically called out as being due to the type of labyrinth involved (e.g. a pocket universe). Lastly, it is not true rolling a "high enough number of rolls" results in a win, as you stated; it is more subtle than that, and while it does involve a good deal of luck, it also required a great deal of resource management and ingenuity. I'm sorry you did not enjoy it, but I wish you the best of luck.

Save your money. The map doesn't make sense for this format nor match the numbering. It's simply a set of random gen tables and if you make it to a high enough number of rolls you "Win".

This comment, while old, may not have been aware of the fact that a lot of solo supplements and tools are indeed based on random generation tables. They are generally prompt resources meant to spark your imagination and not intended be the sum-total of the experience.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
