The Blackest of Deaths - Dire Old School Fantasy RPG

"The Blackest of Deaths is what it says on the tin. Your character is dropped into a brutal, unforgiving world that is actively opposed to your survival. You're prey that doesn't know it's place yet. There's no character advancement, no way to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. There is you, a handful of meager items, a few minimal abilities, and the finality of defeat.

Now, that sounds like a real downer to most. Why would anyone want to play that? Isn't the point of a roleplaying game to experience some kind of power fantasy and character agency? Well, the answer to all of these questions is yes -- and that's the beauty of Blackest. Surviving to fight another day in this game feels like a genuine accomplishment. Your character will struggle like never before. Your character will fail. Your character will die.

But not every time. And on those rare occasions when you do manage to leap from the gaping, inexorable jaws of oblivion, you'll walk away with a great story to tell your fellow gamers and a gaming experience worth remembering. You will live. You will cheat death. You will survive.

This time..."

Any comments from users/players on this addition? Seems like filler. Is there a significant improvement in content and gameplay?

Just FYI the treasure charts on this PDF are still incorrect.
It's been like 7 months this first got pointed out.
The PDF also still doesn't have a ToC.
I bought this in and I'm really regretting it. I can't even imagine how it must be for the poor bastards who paid all that extra money for the "deluxe" hardcopies to have them delivered with all these errors in them.
It seem like the author just pumps out one game after another and abandons whatever's come before.
How about fixing issues with one game before launching a bunch of others?

A few things I noticed in the book ...

- The Ranged Weapons & Armor, Shields & Transportation sections have their headers in red while the rest of the book uses black, I didn't notice why.
- In the bestiary section of the book, Terror is listed for every creature until you hit the Minotaur, after that nothing had one. Same is true for all entries in the Bonus Bestiary at the back of the book.
- In the Treasure section, a number of the charts have a column "Turn to page" a number of those pages refer to pages in the bestiary section of the book (pgs 76-96).
- Last one I noticed in a quick peruse was that the font in the bonus bestiary is different than the rest of the book.

Thank you for an interesting take on things.

To follow up, the first item seems to only apply to the BW version of the book, the color version has color headers throughout. The rest are the same in both editions.

Thank you so much for the feedback. We are actually in the process of re-editing both files now and cleaning everything up. Hope to have the new versions uploaded before Oct. *fingers-crossed*

I'm getting ready to run the game for the first time tonight, and I just noticed that the page references on the Treasure Chart don't match up. Just FYI.

This game is great! I just gave it a trial run with my 10 year old son tonight. I can't wait to play again with a whole group. My son, not so much. After like 6 broken weapons ('1's' were mostly rolled on his d6, even if he got a crit in some instances), poison gas(Grimtooth's dice were used), 8 kobolds, a werebear, and 2 liches, he was done, out, angry, and ready for bed...success, lol. That was all in just an hour or so...I kind of want to stay up all night and make a large bestiary using the Monster Alphabet from Goodman Games!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
