Hexcrawl Basics

This supplement is a guide to the mechanical methods of running a hexcrawl style campaign. It is written for OSR-style games, specifically Necrotic Gnome's Old School Essentials, but can easily be adapted to fit others. It includes methods of both traveling through hexes and exploring within a hex, clarifications on rules for getting lost, populating a hex with lairs, determining the range of monsters within the lair, and more.

This document has been revised and compiled as part of Into the Wild, a book containing five of the free or lower cost document I have put out: Classing up the Joint, Domain Building, Hexcrawl Basics, Random Weather Generation, and Wealth by NPC Level. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/353949/Into-the-Wild

The PDF is in black and white, yet on page 8 it refers to the blue and red lines in an example map - which of course both appear as grey.

Not sure I will have any luck posting here but I don't know how else to contact the author.

I don't suppose you have a tutorial showing how you build these hex maps in Hexographer/Worldographer?
Thanks.

I wanted to add a hex crawl element in my D&D campaign for when my players go to another plane to find a lost soul. This is the perfect resource for explaining the logistics of working at that scale. It is well organized and explains the issues one should consider when designing the mechanics of encounters, travel, weather, and the like. My only complaint is that the figures, which themselves are helpful, are unfortunately of low resolution which makes them blurry. Reading the hex numbers and icons are difficult.

This is a well thought out, detailed product. It makes running hexcrawls so much easier. Looking forward to using it in a game.

“Spore” should be “spoor” throughout the document.

Why are there 5 sub hexes in a 6 mile hex? 1.2 miles instead of 1?

He explains it in the first 2 pages of the book. Why not go and read it.

This got me too. I think the confusion is if you don’t read the whole sentence.

“The template used herein breaks down each six mile hex into five smaller hexes (sub-hexes), from face to face.”

I was confused at first at how five hexes fit nicely into a bigger hex and more so when the graphic is shown to have twenty five hexes within a bigger hex.

For whatever reason, I was just not reading after the parenthesis, “from face to face”.

Once I realized I was somehow truncating the sentence, this was pretty straight forward.

This is a godsend. Thank you for doing this. I spent months trying to distil a coherent hexcrawling system from various web resources—and not really being satisfied with how they came out or played. You guys have managed to do exactly what I have been after. Thank you for this. Easy contender for Best Freebie!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
