Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City is a tabletop role-playing game book, half setting, half adventure, and half epic trip; inspired by psychedelic heavy metal, the Dying Earth genre, and classic Oregon Trail games. It leads a group of ‘heroes’ into the depths of a vast and mythic steppe filled with the detritus of time and space and fuzzy riffs.

Note! This is the original, kickstarted edition of UVG. A 2nd edition, a director's cut shall we say, is now available here: UVG 2E.

  • 32 ready-to-run destinations
  • scores of strange discoveries to pepper around your world
  • a few mini-adventures and a generative lunar dungeon
  • over 200 color illustrations
  • 7 unusual factions, from sentient mind-controlling cats to many-bodied porcelain princes, and dozens of backgrounds for characters
  • preview of SEACAT game system but written to be system-light and easily ported to the game system of your choice, from D&D 5E to GLOG to PbtA.
  • equipment for the ultraviolet wastes
  • long-distance travel rules
  • caravan rules and unusual trade goods
  • spells, biomagical corruption, portal gates, and a ton of strange items
  • history, climate, and discovery generators
  • color referee screen
  • a very long vertical map
Physical copies of the 1st edition UVG are now out of print. Hardcover copies of the second edition are available at Exalted Funeral and local gaming stores.
There are currently no plans to make UVG 1E available in POD.

The UVG is the work of the designer, artist, and writer Luka Rejec and was made possible through the generous support of hundreds of discerning fans at the Stratometaship patreon. Luka's previous work includes illustrating Chris Kutalik's acid fantasy Misty Isles of the Eld, co-writing What Ho Frog Demons with the Hydra Coöperative, and writing, art, and design on the twice-sold-out adventure of witch-hunting: Witchburner.

Can you create a POD for this, please. It's impossible to get hold of a hardcopy.

Thanks for the request!

We're working on a slightly updated hardcover reprint with EF. I wanted it to be more than just a new cover, so it took a bit of time which means the book has been out of stock.

Soon, I promise!

I'll see about updating the pdfs on here and itch, too, so you'll get notified.

Is there any way to obtain the accessories for UVG such as the fold out map that appeared to come packaged with hardcover editions? I checked the Exalted Funeral store and they didn't seem to carry the map or hardcover edition.

We're planning a reprint (hopefully later this year). I'll also see about putting up a free / at cost POD version on dtrpg.

I'll announce it everywhere on all social medias multiple times.

I guess the @stratometaship Twitter might be easy, or the Xenon Elasmotherium substack: https://lukarejec.substack.com/about

Hello,
I bought the 2019 version which is no longer available in DTRPG.
Can you tell me where the differences are and if it would make sense for me to buy this one, too?
Thanks

I'm not sure there is any noticeable difference in the text content. This is the same book - there were a few typos changed and some of the later print editions have a different cover. If your copy is ~192 pages long, it's the same book.

If you mean the free introduction, released back in 2018 — that was shorter and had different layout.

If/when a V3.0 comes out, with substantial changes to the content, you'll be sure to know. It'll probably have a giant number somewhere, and a big blurb saying what's new and different :)

Checking in to add my voice to the chorus asking for an estimate on physical copies. Currently, the secondary market for this is insane considering it's a relatively recent publication.

The Roll20 character sheet has words displaying over each other and it really looks bad. I’m organizing a game in a few weeks to introduce several DMs to this system to run with their own groups, but I don’t want them to see the error as their first impressions. Can you please fix the character sheet? Whether I’m on smart phone, tablet, or a computer it looks the same.

Hi David,

There is no official UVG Roll20 sheet that I work on or maintain. Any sheets there are fan-made and I suggest contacting the creators. I wish you best of luck!

Cheers,
Luka

In my opinion, one of the most innovative contributions to Indie roleplaying games

This oozes 1970 sci-fi aesthetics. Although Rejec has is own inimitable style and intriguing choice of colour palette, it reminds me of the joy I experience when finding Moebius and or reading Dupuis' Spirou, which in the 70, gave us a glimpse of the future in it's own claire ligne style.

The content has gonzo ideas that leaps at you from every page and yet would not be amiss as the basis for a modern sci fi adaptation. Some pages (like the End, the black city) give me Hyperion Cantos, whereas the plagues, or what happened to some locations give me Alastaire Reynolds vibes.

Is it post-apocalyptic, Western, post-humanist, body or cosmic horror or pop scifi? Are we in a Barsoom, Mongo or Barberella? It's all of the above: We have a kind of terminator, Pod-people, Hive minds, and psionic cats. And way too much weird stuff to even touch the surface here.

What we do: traveling on...See more

Yes, please. I really want this as premium color hardcover! And any of the supplements as premium color softcovers. These are so gorgeous, I'd really want them anyway, but due to the many tables and need to flip around, they're also extremely hard to play from the PDFs.

I just checked, but it's still only available as pdf at EFP. I saw the hardcover in Questing Beast's YouTube review, and I *really* want it, no matter where I can buy it! Please tell whoever has the printing rights that there's demand! And merry Christmas! :)

I actually checked and the physical books of the second printing went through the following struggles so far:

> held up at border as potentially subversive literature (turned out they weren't),
> held up by massive snowstorm,
> most recently: held up by ransomware attack at logistics centre.

When I add this to the challenges of the first physical printing:

> family tragedy,
> pandemic,
> shut borders during lockdown.

I can only say I'm surprised we dodged (till now) the one I'd really expected to be a mess: brexit.

Life is weird.

Here's hoping the physical book is ready soon-soon!

The hardcover is available again, a second somewhat revised edition! More art, more pages, less rules to get in the way of the setting.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
