In Darkest Warrens (Ultimate Edition)

IN DARKEST WARRENS - ULTIMATE EDITION is a minimalist fantasy roleplaying game whose basic rules cover two pages, including a bestiary and introductory 252398.jpgadventure. All you need is some six-sided dice, paper, pencils and, of course, a bunch of buddies to play with.

The Ultimate Edition includes even more bang for your buck, with a Referee Guide, collating rules from two supplements, and Darkholme, a town setting - perfect for starting your campaign. Here's what else you get in this slim package:

  • All the rules you need, including character advancement for campaign play
  • Five classes: warrior, rogue, barbarian, mage and ranger
  • Six optional races: Human, elf, dwarf, halfling, half-orc, and dragonkin
  • A bestiary containing 23 fiendish monsters to throw at your players
  • Super easy resolution system - all you need is a single d6
  • An introductory adventure: The Cow of Boburn
  • Rules for travelling, traps and adventuring
  • A one-page setting - Darkholme, filled with hooks to get you playing
  • Cleaned up and modified rules
  • Fantastic art from Stinky Goblin

Print the rules right out and use them for reference at the table. Perfect for a pick-up and play game.

What's In Darkest Warrens all about?

  • Rulings, not rules: IDW doesn't give you every rule you need (it's only 4 pages, after all) so players and referees are expected to be interpretive and creative when it comes to rules that aren't covered.
  • Player creativity over character stats: There are no lists of skills and feats in the game. Players will rely on their ingenuity and lateral thinking to overcome challenges. Referees will reward cleverness and creativity.
  • Easily compatable with old school material: IDW rules are hyperlite, making it easy to run your favourite adventures with minimal fuss.
  • Simple to run: You can read over the rules and hit the table in a short space of time. The rules are easy to remember, too.

Updates from the original edition

If you're a fan of the original game, here are some of the changes made to the basic rules:

  • Creatures in the bestiary no longer have to use an action to use their abilities - most have innate special rules now
  • Mages and Barbarians can now only wear hide armour, but Barbarians have increased in wounds
  • Advanced combat has been cleaned up to get rid of a couple of troublesome rules
  • Gain 2 wounds when levelling rather than 1. Also some xp reward levels have changed
  • Death rules have changed to increase game tension

Is there any guidance on rolling random encounters? Would rolling on charts in D&D clones be balanced? I am not looking for the meticulous balance that 5E players might strive for (this is am OSR), but it's a completely different mechanic than D&D. Some guidance would be helpful.

I have played a great many RPGs and can say that this RPG is the BEST RPG I have ever played :)

The rules are small yet packed with soooo much goodness and fun :)

So glad I found this set and its expansions! :)

I absolutely love this ttrpg. It's extremely simple, has an excellent base and inspiration, and takes no time to pick up, but I had some nitpicks because I'm an extreme realist with my own systems. I've made my own personal hack of it for my gaming group that is a little more realistic, but it's just shy of 6 pages. Would I be able to get your permission to release this version of it or would you take it up and release it yourself?

I found the character sheet in the regular edition, but if this is the "ULTIMATE EDITION," I feel like a character sheet should be included in this file. My 2 cents. Regardless, thanks for making this great product.

Could you add all the things from the supplements (i.e: the classes, magic items, and monsters)?

Aside from a few typos here and there, this game is what I was looking for... simple and straightforward rules all contained in a few pages.

Scott, maybe next update include your Kingdom of Thaw expansion? Thanks!

May I ask anyone for some clarification? When the text states "1 wound per half class level rounded up", what should we understand? Is it like in "1 coin per half pint of ale"? So "2 wounds/coins per class level/pint of ale", or the opposite? The "rounded up" part is confusing me, probably because I'm not a native english speaker... Thanks in advance!

Hey - it just means that you're healing 1 extra wound every 2 levels. So if I'm a level 3 mage I heal 2 wounds (half of my level rounded up). Hope that helps

Perfectly packed bundle of fun, fast-paced good ol' gaming with a refined and modern flavour. Perfect for a zero-prep session, with an easy character generation system and a pregenerated environment that makes for a quick setup, but also great for a longer campaign, with a great character advancement and a whole bunch of advanced options.

Hey, nice to see that you took some of my suggestions! But I wasn't expecting a whole new game!! Well, it's a more balanced and play-worthy version of the already amazing original. With a few extra pages, it's reached the complexity of any Dungeons & Dragons-style game but still focused on the essence of it, so far from getting bogged down in the rules. More freedom, more fun. I do believe IDW (UE) is the best "D&D clone" there is!

Scott, please consider adding a version number somewhere. (i.e. "v1.0.2" or similar).

Snapped up the Ultimate Edition as soon as advertised as we've had a lot of fun with the original. Best on the block for introducing neophytes to the joys of RPG and keeps oldies on our toes too. Excellent work Scott.
PS Many thanks for the promptness of the update, where would we be without torches?!

IMHO, Scott delivers the finest fantasy gaming experience of any English frp author. If I weren't devoted to my own system, I would totally be a Scott Malthouse fan. I am anyway, just not totally---ha ha ha ha! The price is right. The quality is exceptional. Get this game. I did. --Ken St. Andre

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
