Microlite2020 Complete

Microlite2020 is a new branch of the Microlite20 D20-based rules-lite system. It takes the Microlite20 core rules and makes some updates and changes to incorporate some of the design ideas that have been developed in Microlite20 supplements and variants since the core rules were released in 2006. The more noticeable changes include:

  • The four Microlite20 skills are replaced with Archmage Engine style player/GM created Backgrounds.
  • Races are now Ancestries. Instead of giving bonuses to attributes, they provide additional Backgrounds based on the particular Ancestry.
  • Tracking hits points has become easier, especially for spell casters. In Microlite20, when a character's hit points are reduced to zero, they begin to lose points of strength (which meant everything based on Strength needed to be recalculated as Strength points were lost). In Microlite2020, characters have Wound Points equal to their Strength and lose wound points when they are out of hit points. In Microlite20, spell casters had to track hit points lost to spell casting separately from hit points lost to normal things like combat -- as they recovered at different rates. In Microlite2020, hit points recover completely (as long as the character is not down any wound points) with a night's rest -- eliminating the need for spell casters to track two different pools of hit points.
  • Each class has three class abilities. Fighters have Martial Ability, Cleave, and Favored Weapon. Rogues have Sneak Attack, Riposte, and Connections. Mages have Arcane Spellcasting, Arcane Blast, and Minor Magic. Clerics have Divine Spellcasting, Smite, and Turn Undead.

Microlite2020 Complete combines the Microlite2020 core rules with all of the major Microlite2020 supplements (Optional Rules, Equipment, Basic Monsters, Basic Spell Lists, and Simple Mass Combat) into one 16 page book. This booklet includes public domain artwork.

About the Price:

Microlite2020 Complete is a "pay what you want" product with a suggested price of $0.00. In other words it is a free product, but you have the option to toss a few bucks my way if you really want to. So go ahead and enter a zero for what you want to pay and download it for free without feeling guilty. I want you to have a copy of Microlite2020 Complete far more than I want your money!

What is Microlite20?

Microlite20 is an OGL role-playing game containing character generation, combat and rules for magic, monsters and level advancement. It ripped the guts out of d20 leaving just the essence of the game. Skills are much simplified, there are no feats and combat is as simple as it gets. Microlite20 is a trimmed-down, subminiature version of the Primary Fantasy Tabletop RPG SRD rules that has been designed to be quick and easy to play. The goal was to create a simpler game, but one where all of the resources of Primary Fantasy SRD (monsters, spells, adventures and equipment) could be used without conversion. It was designed for the 3.5 SRD but will work with the 3.0 SRD or even the PF SRD. The original rules for character generation, combat, magic and level advancement took up a single sheet of paper (of very fine print), making it great for introducing role-playing to new players, gaming one-shot adventures or tailoring into your own game system. Of course, the Microlite20 quickly grew beyond the original (extremely basic) rules with a number of optional systems and supplemental modules (e.g. lists of equipment and spells) designed to make the game playable without needing to constantly refer to a copy of the SRD. Microlite20 is also the basis for a large number of independent variant games in many genres -- the current (2017) edition of the Microlite20 RPG Collection has just over 2000 pages of Microlite20 based RPGs.

Hi !

*Fighter questions :

Class Abilities : Martial Ability-+1 to all attack rolls (increasing by +1 per four levels), add level to initiative and damage rolls.

Level Advancement : Fighters gain +1 to their attack and damage rolls at levels 5,10,15,etc.

Which ones are true ?
1) per four level = 1/4/8/12 etc. or 1/5/9/13 etc. or is it per five levels = 5/10/15 etc ?
2) add level to damage rolls or just +1 ?

*Sample Characters and HP
Hit Point and Healing : First level characters have 1d6 + STR hit points.
It's strange to see that all four sample characters start with 1 + STR HP.

Backgrounds questions: 1) You get 8 points, and then you say you can add up to 2 points to Ancestry-based backgrounds. Is that a total of 10 points, or does that just mean you're limited to using a maximum of 2 out of your 8 points on ancestry-based backgrounds? 2) It looks like two of your sample characters have 8 points in backgrounds, but the other two have 11 points, and they're all level 1. Am I reading that right, and is that intentional? Thanks!

1) You get 8 points of backgrounds, of which a maximum of two can be applied to the character's Ancestry background.
2)::facepalm:: I thought I had finally fixed that. All starting characters should have 8 points, not 11. The 11 was from an earlier draft. Playtesting showed 11 points for starting characters were too many. I'll try again to fix this and upload a new version later this week. (I wait to upload in case any more problems are discovered.)

A corrected version has been uploaded (Version 1.02) that clarifies the interaction of the starting 8 background points with the free 3 point ancestral background and fixes issues with the sample characters.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
