Wolves of God: Adventures in Dark Ages England

Selected Option:

It is 710 AD. It is an age of iron and ruin, a wolf-season amid the ashes of Roman Britain. The spears of the English tribes are raised against their rivals, and the Wealh of the western hills remember bitterly what was taken from them. The shattered caesters of past Roman glory litter the land, each one laden with forgotten troves hidden by desperate men of the last days. Sorcerous Arxes once sealed against a Roman rescue that never came are now cracking open, the changed refugees within now seeking vengeance for a ruin of centuries past. The holy minsters of pious monks and godly nuns stand as bulwarks against cruel and merciless bloodshed, but can their labors ever hope to tame the beasts within their kinsmen's hearts?

Wolves of God is an old-school-inspired historical fantasy game from the maker of Stars Without Number and Godbound. Set in 710 AD, PCs take up the roles of daring English adventurers: brave Warriors, holy Saints, and sorcerous Galdormen all setting forth to brave the savage wilds of post-Roman Britain. Whether plundering ruined caesters, delving into the bewitched halls of ancient Roman Arxes, raiding the cattle of rival lords, or helping holy abbots in need of strong arms, the heroes will plunge deep into the savage past of this half-conquered island.

Within these pages, you'll get...

  • Guides and tools for creating adventures in early Anglo-Saxon England, with an eye for playable content and GM helps. While Wolves of God includes fantastical elements in its setting, it's possible to play the game historically straight for hard-core history enthusiasts.
  • System-neutral tools for building religious minsters, Roman ruins, sorcerous Arxes, Anglo-Saxon political conflicts, and all the sandbox adventuring grist to be expected from a Sine Nomine game.
  • A full bestiary of classic Anglo-Saxon monstrosities and fell foes, along with tools for customizing their powers and adding extra mystery to their dreadful might.
  • Sorcery and miracles tailored to the time and place, with classic English galdor and pious miracles available for PC use.
  • Guidelines for domain management and mass combat in the harsh and primitive age of the early Anglo-Saxon chieftains.
  • Full compatiblity with Stars Without Number: Revised edition, with guides for mixing content between the games.

So take up your spears and lift your shields, bold adventurers! Deeds of mighty heroism and the songs of the scops await your labors. Seize Wolves of God now and take your place among the mighty names of old.

Not per se, no, but the PDF has layers on it that can be turned on and off to deactivate the art, the page tint, and other elements.

I saw a video review for this book and I'm wondering where we can buy the red leatherette deluxe version? Also, is there an art-less black & white physical version of this book to buy?

I would love to see a followup of this set a hundred and some years later during the invasion of the Great Heathen Army and the establishment of the Danelaw. A kind of Saxon Chronicles/Last Kingdom supplement.

Mr. Crawford, as much as I love this, and in fact all of your games, I would be over joyed if you ever did a similar project with a Roman theme. I feel the Classical era is an over looked gem in the OSR/D&D style setting and system world.

Mind I don't intend to wait on you. Your various games, especially the new edition of Worlds Without Number, give all the necessaries to put together a project like that on my own, but I would be happy to invest in such an endeavor should you take a notion in that direction.

I'm just curious why there isn't a Premium version option for Print on Demand. I'd pay the extra 20 bucks for that.

On page 136 (English Laws and Wergild), I believe that there is a typo in the section about Assault: "...they must pay 120 shillings to the ceorl’s lord and 6 to the householder himself."

Should that instead be 60 shillings to the householder?

As I recall, it was six in the law code I referenced. The big offense was breaking the lord's protection; you owe the ceorl for punching somebody, but you owe the lord for repudiating his rights over violence.

I have been having a blast running this game with a few friends ive just ordered a hard copy. Its easy to run unlike a lot of other RPG games that have too much information and more supplements you need. Ive used alot of local history and legends to make my campaign run mostly centering on the conflict between Wessex and Dumnonia. Its quite funny half my player party are not even Saxons but Celts and foreigners. Are their any rules in game about mounted combat i have looked at the rules but couldn't find any?

Hi, just bought the hardcover + PDF, very nice! But I'm confused by Shock Damage. When I've used Shock Damage rules in other systems it usually degrades or causes a penalty to actions and saves rather than HP loss. In Wolves, is Shock Damage basically applied like normal damage to a character's HP, or is it different?

I am not the author, obviously, but I read it to make that Shock Damage is like regular damage in that it reduces HP.

Hi folks, is this project dead? I can find almost no references to it on the net, or YouTube (2 videos, one from the Kickstarter), no character sheets, in fact there are no references to the game on the publisher's website. The work itself is a departure from the author's previous games - it's digest-size and lacks the volume of GM aids that made earlier releases really stand out. Bit confused.

Regarding character sheets: This was brought up on the Kickstarter page. Mr. Crawford stated there "Fans and backers are welcome to post up any of their own fanmade material, character sheets or otherwise" with the caveat that it not be presented a official content. A fan (Mason Munden) made an unofficial character sheet here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GPjrhkRxUtxwc94PHqPTSFIDV0FoGKlN/view?usp=sharing

Matthew S- Have you ever heard of King Arthur Pendragon? It is an excellent role playing system that is completely from the perspective of the Cymric. The Saxons - in line with history - are disliked to hated. I am a GM for that. I think it is all about the perspective the game comes from. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. You either accept it or not for YOURSELF. These are the perils of a historical game, as someone said.
Matthew, if I want to try out Pendragon, drop me a line. joseph.quesnel@gmail.com

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
