The Gaia Complex - Quick Start

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Gaia Complex is a cyberpunk RPG set in the year 2119, in New Europe, a single sprawling metropolis that covers much of what we currently know as mainland Europe. New Europe is a world of street violence, espionage, vampiric uprisings and an overzealous A.I., known as Gaia, which functions as the city’s governor and the protector of its citizens. The Gaia Complex is a game of conspiracy and brutality, where players take on the roles of Mercs; former police officers, hackers and street-savvy dealers who are hired to fight back against the system and ultimately unravel secrets of The Gaia Complex.

This quick start provides an insight to the game's setting and background as well as providing a slimmed-down version of the rules, two pre-written 'Data Seeds' (scenarios) and five pre-generated characters, allowing players to jump straight into the world of The Gaia Complex.

Hi, I've got two questions about the quickstart rules:

1) What is the correct damage of the Dyer Arms F-Rail? It is given as "1d12+3d3" on p. 31, but as "1d12+1d3" on Fenna De Vries' character sheet.

2) When exactly is a skill test considered a "critical failure" for unskilled characters? On p. 15 it says "Any active skill test resulting in a failure that also has a 12 showing on either die, is considered a critical failure." (which implies that a critical failure is triggered for an unskilled pc if one of the dice is actually a success and the other a 12), whereas the table on the same page only gives a critical failure if BOTH dice are failures (with one or both a 12).

Hi Hendrik,

Thanks for this (and for being the first person to point these out). Sorry for the late response - I didn't get a notification about this comment.

1. The correct damage for the F-Rail is 1d12+3d3, as per the core rulebook. I'll have the updated in the QS files ASAP.

2. This is a good question! A critical failure only occurs when both dice are a failure and at least one of them shows a 12. Being unskilled increases the risk of failure, but not the risk of a critical failure. The opening paragraph at the bottom should read: "An active skill test resulting in two dice failures and with a 12 showing on either die...." I'll also have this updated and add it to the core book errata on our website.

Thanks!

Wanted to make a suggestion. You're using d3 for consistency of the curve. Have you considered using Fudge dice? 3d3 + 3 = 3dF + 6 with the same exact curve. The advantage of Fudge dice is it's clear that the expected average is 6 without doing any math.

Just a thought and looking forward to more work on this setting.

Adam, sorry for the slow reply - I didn't get any kind of notification about this post! I know you have since emailed me with this question, but I wanted to update here just to confirm to others that might read this - yes, Fudge dice were actually considered (and used) during play testing. The eventual result was that the use of d3s (typically using d6s) was preferred by almost everyone involved in testing, which was the final reason that we went down that route.

Plus, d12s and d3s need some love! :)

Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
