"Rock solid little adventure. If most adventures were this good then I wouldn’t be reviewing adventures".

- Bryce Lynch, Tenfootpole.org

Deep in the fetid swamp lies abandoned Nekemte, ancient serpent man city of the Jade Empire and home to the royal house of Nekemte - cruel, tyrannical sorcerers and practitioners of necromancy, corrupted cultists of Yul. The great swamp consumed Nekemte following the fall of the Jade Empire, its buildings crumbling and falling into decay. Throughout the centures, terror of the sepent man sorcery hung over the ruins, and shadowy creatures stalked the crumbling edifices at night, feeding on the warmth of the living. A party of looters recently dared the ruins and stole into the lower tombs where they unearthed the Arimax Stone, an artifact of great power, in the process unwittingly awakening an ancient, slumbering menace...

For a party of 5th to 6th level characters.

Darkness at Nekemte is a Gunderholfen campaign setting expansion module with a dark sword & sorcery feel. It can be used with Gunderholfen or run as a once-off in any campaign; Gunderholfen is not required to run this adventure. Darkness at Nekemte is designed to be used with OSRIC and other OSR games. It includes:

  • Approximately 70 keyed encounter locations and sub-areas
  • A swamp and ruins adventure site
  • A main dungeon level
  • Wilderness encounters and locations to facilitate swamp-based hexcrawls
  • 19 new monsters, 15 new spells, 12 new magic items and lots of new diseases.

The PDF is bookmarked and hyperlinked. Separate JPEG maps for VTT play are included with the PDF file.

I am using this in an upcoming Gunderholfen Campaign and I find that the images are a l little low resolution. Is it possible we could get higher resolution source images for the maps? It will make it much easier to incorporate into the VTT I am using for the campaign

Hi Duncan, good to hear you're interested in running this. I'm not sure what resolution suits your VTT set-up best, but you can alter the image resolution through something simple like Paint to fit the exact dimensions you want just by 'resizing' the image to the pixel range you require. There are some free online tools available that can do this too. Let me know if that helps or not.

The issue I am having is that upsizing them to a size my VTT (foundry for reference) can use leads to blurry images; it is not too bad and i think I can cope

Hi Duncan, I've updated the VTT map files, the new ones should be clearer. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, it looks like I may grabbed the wrong files on the initial upload. Let me know how these go, thanks!

I have products for sale so I can't review other items on DTRPG. So let me just say, I've just bought this and already excited. If you are running Gunderholfen this is a great purchase. Sooo many new tidbits on the Ganfal swamp, Balor's Rent, etc. that will go right into my game. G. Hawkins is a powerhouse in terms of doing it all himself. The art and layout are better looking than Gunderholfen, showing he's growing in experience. Can't comment on the adventure itself yet but I'm sure it'll be OSR goodness.

potentially dumb question: is it all in B&W? Because then I could take the softcover one.

You may have missed the note at the bottom of the description. Yes it’s BW. The color print option uses higher quality paper than the standard BW hardcover and I thought it would be nice to have a good quality hardcover available (because I liKe that kind of thing myself!). I will be putting up a standard BW hardcover soon if you want to save a few dollars.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
