100 Secret Societies

ADD TO WISHLIST >

There's no telling what conversations are held behind closed doors. Backroom bargains and whispered agreements might go without notice by the general populace, or they might sway the fate of nations. Organizations who operate in the shadows, and who use secrecy and ritual to hide their membership and true goals, can be enemies as often as they are allies. Whether you need an organization for your party to work for, or one who is pulling the strings to manipulate them without revealing their hands, the following secret societies should do the job quite nicely.

Here are some sample results:

  • The Bastion: Garbed in gray and white, with raised hoods obscuring their faces, the members of the Bastion view themselves as the keepers of goodness and purity. While some of their activities occur behind the scenes, others are significantly more obvious. Massacres of unarmed civilians, attacks on populations they consider impure, intimidation and threats have all been laid at this secret society's feet. The members refuse to move, however, seeing themselves as defending their homeland from interlopers through whatever means necessary.
  • The Silver Seal: There are many tales about the curse of the werewolf. Some say it's a malady spread by the bite of one that's been afflicted, while others claim it's an enchantment that must be broken by potent rituals or divine intervention. What few know is that in the barren lands of northern Vosrovia there is a council who seeks those who suffer the skin change. Some say this council is made up of hunters whose only goal is to slay the werewolves they uncover, while others claim the Silver Seal spirits away those with this unique condition, teaching them to control it so they can still live among the populace in secret. Many speculate on what this secret society's goals are, what they would do with so many lycanthropes and which masters they truly serve.
  • Collegia Infernis: The powers of hell are not to be trucked with lightly, and those who wish for the aid of experienced practitioners to act on their behalf will usually attempt to approach members of this occult society. It's said those who request a meeting in the Red Room at certain taverns and social clubs will be shown to a secret parlor. After a brief wait, they will be met by a servant who will hear their request. Rumor says one should always treat the servant with the utmost respect, as it is likely a devil in disguise acting on behalf of the conjurers of the society.
  • The Brim: There are places in the world that are tainted by forces beyond most people's understanding. Places where dire powers were unleashed, but which now lie sleeping. Those who seek these places, whether they know what lurks within them or not, tend to run afoul of the Brim. Figures wreathed in ragged black, their faces hidden by carved masks of bone, few who catch sight of the Brim live to tell the tale. The society always lets one person escape to spread the word, though, hoping it will frighten others into avoiding the places they guard. Those who have tracked the legends of the Brim, and listened to the tales, though, believe that the guardians themselves have grown warped over time, corrupted by the very taint they are trying to hide from the world.
  • The Aligned: Strange things live in the corners of the word, but not all of them were placed there by the gods. Some of these creatures came from other worlds, traveling in nighted ships that fell from the stars. The Aligned study these creatures, attempting to learn where they came from, and why. What those outside the society don't know is that the Aligned themselves were first formed by the descendants of star voyagers who were stranded on this world, and who sought to conceal their unique traits and bloodlines within the world's populace.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
