Lone Star: Solo rules for Mothership RPG

This rules supplement allows you to play Mothership © RPG without a Warden. It does this using some very simple game mechanics that are fully in keeping with the Mothership gameplay. These should be instantly recognisable to a Mothership fan.

Solo is a perfect way to learn a new game, test your first adventures and going beyond just making characters when you are first getting to know the rules.

Warden Emulation

Mothership is not a game of rolling skills at every challenge, it is one of imaginative play and the Warden creating challenges to put your character under stress. These rules turn questions you would normally as your Warden into prompts for your own improvisation. They suggest points were plot twists should throw your characters off or introduce new threats.

Your Crew

Solo works best with a single crew member under your control. You are the star of the show, and the story is all about you. In Mothership, the way that stress and panic cascades through the crew are important elements. These rules give you tools to create crew members and have them behaviours, faithful to their own agendas, without you have to roleplay them as complete PCs.

Print Version

This booklet will be going to print at some point in the future. This download contains two different versions of the PDF, one black text on a white page, the other inverted. When I have decided which is the better looking and most functional. I will prepare print-ready PDFs.

Do you have any idea when the updated version of this for Mothership V1 might be released? People on the Solorpg subreddit are asking.

I don't have a timeline for V1. I haven't even read the new version yet. I have no idea if any changes would actually be needed. Is it much different?

Just bought the rules and I have 2 questions:
1) Am I to assume that when you refer to rolling up 2 "facts" to create a scene, you mean rolling on the provided open question lists? Do you have any random tables that are more robust?
2) When the Doom score is first mentioned, it is compared to the stress mechanic for Mothership, but it only seems to function as a complication designation when establishing a scene, as described in the starting a scene section. Are there rules for using the doom score as first described on the Key Ideas page? This would seem to fit better with the Mothership ethos, rather than just being a generic solo engine mechanic.

Yes, your assu, ptions are correct. The first release of these rules had much more focused random tables, but as more 3rd party material came out, the breadth of what people were using Mothership for required a much wider ranging open question tool.
I am looking to update these rules for 1e at some point, I will rate your Doom suggestion on board.

Thank you for writing this, but I'm a little unclear on the Doom. Does it work in addition to Stress? Or in place of it?

Doom is part of the solo rules and GM emulation. It is in addition to Stress.

Thank you.
I'll go Ctrl+F through the document again and see if it spells out what happens when Doom reaches X, or something similar. Because I swear there wasn't anything about it the last time I looked.

I cannot believe i paid $4.95 for this. It is a 26 page .pdf file, with approximately 10 pages being title pages, photos, or fill in sheets for characters and/or plots. There is very little actual content and only a few tables provided. This is a $0.99 system at best based on what is provided. If i could refund my purchase I would, since this adds very little to my gaming experience.

If only there was some kind of full preview you could have looked at before spending the money... (/rolls eyes)

Looks like you forgot to invert the separator lines in the Scenes List, the NPC List, and the Plot List. Can't see them (white on white). It's a minor quibble (easy to draw my own).

Thank you for putting this together. I liked it quite a lot until I got to the Blockchain. I just don't see the reason for it, and it seems impossible to implement. You say that at the beginning of a scene, I'm supposed to generate a string of one- and two-digit numbers in sets of 6 and 5 respectively, like this: 2, 0, 1, 3, 3, 9, 20, 01, 13, 33, 39, and keep appending new sets of numbers to this list at the top of every scene.

I'm supposed to use these numbers "when the solo rules call for a dice roll." But that confuses me, when the Facts themes, and Crew personality and behavior tables are 0-9 only. What if I need to roll for crew behavior at the start of a scene, but the next 5 numbers in the blockchain are two digits? Do I skip past them? The solo rules don't say. This grouping of d10 and d100 rolls would also mean that I could end up answering six open questions in a row with automatic "Yes and..."

Likewise, using a pre-generated string of rolls for Mothership...See more

The chain of numbers can be read as singles or as pairs as needed. The intention is to shift much of the dice rolling to before you play the scene, rather than interrupting it with the need to roll during the middle of your playing. If you runout of numbers you can just take a minute to roll a handful of d10s and extend the chain.

These numbers don't only have to be used within the solo rules. They can be use for skill rolls, stress tests or damage, anything within Monthership.

Thanks for the quick reply, Peter. I recently received Mothership in the mail and immediately bought Lone-Star so that I can run my first-ever solo game, so I just want to make sure I understand.

"The chain of numbers can be read as singles or as pairs as needed." That makes sense, but what confused me is that that's not how it's explained in the rules. The solo rules say to roll 6d10 and record the results two ways. Are you now saying to record 6 digits in a non-delimited string, like 201339, which can be split into singles or pairs as needed on the fly?

It is a long time since I wrote those, and I cannot remember the exact wording. What I am actually doing when I play is your non-delimited string.
The intent of the blockchain is to get the maximum amount of work from the six dice.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
