100 Rumours to Hear in or About the Great Rift: Corridor and Reft

When asking around in the spaceport bar or anywhere else, Travellers may overhear rumours about events on other worlds. They may be insuring about a different matter entirely and stumble across additional information by accident. This supplement has 100 rumours that Travellers could hear. They can be used as misdirection, background information or as potential adventure hooks. The rumours in this supplement cover the Great Rift, in particular the sectors of Corridor and Reft, though the occasional astronomical feature from other Great Rift sectors may be mentioned.

• The Great Reef is a strange and dangerous area where ships suffer a higher than normal number of misjumps, something that is officially put down to mundane problems such as poor-quality fuel. Recently, the number of reported misjumps in the Great Reef has been increasing, and some ships have reputedly been completely lost. One suggestion for the existence of jumpspace reefs is that they are connected to the Ancients in some way. Perhaps someone has found whatever technology is responsible for the Great Reef and is experimenting with it.
• The Great Rift can be a dangerous place to travel at the best of times, due to a lack of refuelling stops. However, the crossings make the journey much safer. In recent months, though, there have been claims that a number of ships using the Islands Crossing have been failing to reach their destinations, even though this is a well-travelled route with adequate refuelling stops. Various theories have been posited, from sensible ones such as an increase in misjumps to pirates, to more outlandish ones such as hidden planets and surviving Ancients.
• The highport of Petre in the Vestus subsector of Reft is known for its conversions of ex-navy fighters into one- or two-seater racing craft. These are used in small craft racing and Petre has started sponsoring more races for such, which are held in the system. The manufacturers are apparently planning to hold a major race at some point, with the hopes of attracting contestants from other sectors, but this has been plagued with trouble, to the degree that some suspect sabotage is involved.
• The Imperial Navy is rumoured to have a location somewhere inside the Great Rift, in deep space away from any solar systems, where there is a base for crews patrolling the rift to stand down for some R&R. However, there are rumours that, wherever this base is, it has suddenly fallen silent, with all contact lost. There is no official comment on the rumours, but there is no official acknowledgement that such a base exists anyway.
• The Imperial Interstellar Scout Service has a regular courier link across the Great Rift, with typically two couriers in transit at any time. There are rumours that one of the expected couriers is now overdue, having left its last port but not having arrived at the next. It's unclear whether this is thought to be due to some sort of accident or something more hostile.
