Mythic World of Oldskull - Oldskull Warriors

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Wonderland Imprints is proud to present the first volume in the Mythic World of Oldskull series, providing the advanced modular rules developed for author Kent David Kelly’s epic campaign adventure game. These volumes are designed to integrate perfectly with one another if you collect them all, or to stand alone if you prefer to pick and choose aspects from the Oldskull campaign that you’re personally intrigued by. If you’re looking for universal and directly compatible old school materials to bridge the original game editions created by Arneson and Gygax (1974-1985), Holmes (1977), Moldvay and Cook (1981), Mentzer (1983-1986), and other luminaries of TSR (1974-1989) into a single refined system, you’ve come to the right place.

This detailed volume features the fully refined and corrected classes of the warrior archetype: the doughty Fighter (with clarified rules for weapon specialization), the revised Oldskull Barbarian, the intrepid Hunter, and the deadly Ranger of Queen’s Cambria. All classes have been fully integrated with world mythology, folklore, weird fiction, and detailed campaign notes from the author’s campaign that will bring your warrior characters alive in the World of Oldskull. All of the classes and rules have been reimagined and updated throughout with extensive sagely advice along with out-of-print magazine and newszine errata, supplemented by notes and musings derived from E. Gary Gygax in accordance with his vision for his never-attained Advanced Second Edition.

Twenty of the new elements and systems you will find herein include: extensive themes and evocative level titles for all classes, social standing guidelines by level, freehold guidelines for fighter lords, fighter command ranks, fighter morale and loyalty effects on soldiers, corrected and more intuitive weapon specialization, jumping rules, non-thief climbing rules, rebalanced barbarian role-playing guidelines, 11 iconic Oldskull barbarian tribes (the Amazons, Cimmerians, Stygians, etc.), full barbarian skills based on Gygax’s hunter notes, snare setting rules, wound binding rules, full hunter skills, beast mastery rules, spirit hounds for high-level hunters, free-from-problematic-IP background lore for the ranger class, fully corrected and justified ranger spell casting rules for druidic and magical powers, corrected tracking rules (following from the Unearthed paradigm), and rebalanced and fairer thematic disadvantages for the ranger class.

I hope you enjoy this celebration of the old school TSR tradition. Be sure to watch for future volumes in this series which will detail the full array of character classes, new classes and races, adventuring rules, campaign setting details, and much more. Another fine gaming supplement from Kent David Kelly and Wonderland Imprints, Only the Finest Works of Fantasy. (141 pages, 41,200 words.)

Just wanted to drop a note to thank you again for all the time you put into this. The footnotes reveal all the research that went into solidifying these classes. It's great to have everything collated and corrected.

You know, listing them right next to their peers in such a way, I suddenly feel a little underwhelmed by rangers. They've a great Tolkienian background in the first place, arcane and divine abilities and ties to the faerie realm, all this lore stuff you've wonderfully expanded and emphasized - and yet they are among the weakest of the warrior classes, only above fighters and perhaps templars. Their low ability score requirements demonstrate their relative lack of special skills and abilities, and renders them surprisingly far more common than either barbarians and hunters, in both ways running contrary to their background as struggling nobility and elf-friends.

I think it's an early example of the Power Creep trope: rangers were added first, way before Unearthed Arcana made things more complicated, way before barbarians and hunters got made and got all these special wilderness skills - yet no one ever went back to add said skills to rangers, though I at least think they should rightfully know these...See more

Hi, I could write several essays on that most likely, but it's probably best just to touch on the over-arching themes there :) There were actually several different periods of power creep over time that were only obliquely interrelated. The original 1974 game had only fighting men (powerful early on), magic-users (delayed then extremely powerful) and clerics (balanced throughout progression) as three very different approaches to character power. The deliberate goal appears to have been to shift power levels and to make players reliant upon one another at different times with no clear dominant role over the campaign's lifetime.

The thief was introduced to Gary by a separate group in 75, then you had the Lake Geneva paladin in 75, the Twin Cities assassin and monk in 75, the Sustare druid, the Fischer ranger, the Aronson illusionist, the Schwegman bard, and so forth in the mix before 77. Even though the 1978 Players Handbook that solidified a baseline only had Gygax's name on the cover, there were already...See more

A very insightful short essay. It sounds like the whole Player's Option debacle wasn't the first time things got a little bit untested and shaky.

I'm aware of the class balance disparity in older editions, and I definitely appreciate it. When you meet a paladin in AD&D, you instantly know how formidable he is - how near to the absolute peak human potential his physical and mental attributes are, how few could aspire to what he's doing, and consequently, how many unique special abilities he possesses. He's so far beyond my fighter it isn't even funny (at least as far as the fighter thinks, the jealous bastard). Not everyone is created equal.

But then the later editions removed the ability score requirements, while balancing and smoothening all classes - and it pretty much ruined the whole thing. Now the paladin's just some schmuck: no one has any particular reason to be impressed, unless he's high level. This change, in my mind, makes several of the classes pretty pointless all on...See more

You could always make a ranger knight sub-class or something with higher ability scores, just start with a cavalier or hunter template, scrape off what you don't want and add in what you do. It's easy to make things too powerful but that might work with some careful thought.

Tweak it into being to hunter what paladin is to cavalier: gets the same abilities, more or less - the skills at the very least - along with that magical faerie stuff tacked on top of it. Raise the ability score requirements and slow down progression a tick, and we're good to go.

It wouldn't be terribly hard - and as far as power levels go, still weaker than the paladin. I'll think about it.

This looks pretty cool, but before I purchase it just wanted to check if it's stand alone or is there a core book that needs to be purchased first?

Hi Steve, good to hear from you. The OGL prevents me from directly stating so within the publication, but the Castle Oldskull system might or might not be based directly upon a 1977-1985 AD&D foundation. So if you're familiar with books with initials like MM, PHB, DMG, FF, DD, and UA, that 1E rules set will work directly with these volumes and be 100% compatible. If you're using something else, the lore and details will still be helpful but you'll need to do some conversion work for play. If there's a core book needed for play, it was published about 30 years ago. Hope that helps :)

Thanks for your reply Kent, I don't have those books but I do have a couple of OSR titles that are almost identical so that should hopefully cover what is needed.

The fighter class lists among its advantages as "Bardic Warrior Potential", but I can't find anything of bardic warriors in this book. Is this going to be something detailed in a later publication, or can I already read about it somewhere?

I was always fond of the 1st edition bards and I'd very much like to read your spin on them.

Hi there, to answer I need to give a quick summary of the current project :) The original plan was to publish all of my character class details in one book, but when I fully compiled notes from over the years it clocked in at over 1,000 pages. So I decided to split the project into archetypes, as follows: 1 - warriors, 2 - knights, 3 - priests, 4 - mages, 5 - rogues, 6 - bards, and 7 - cabalists (monks and maybe psychics) along with 8 - adepts (multi-classed demi-humans) and 9 - champions (human characters with two classes). Bardic warriors will appear in the bards book, and will be mostly the 1978 PHB bard with errata and more folkloric development. They will be separate from bards, for which I will go back to the 1976 single-classed bard with some rebalancing and more lore. But I don't expect to get there until 2021.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
