Welcome to Warpstar!

Warpstar is a rules-light science fiction roleplaying game that aims to emulate the feeling of old-school British tabletop games of wondrous and fantastical adventure in the depths of space. Warpstar looks to reproduce the play style of its illustrious predecessors but in a light, quick and simple manner, with a consistent set of rules that are easily 'hackable' and adaptable as desired.

Welcome to Warpstar!

Warpstar is a tabletop roleplaying game, played with pencils, paper and dice. The implied setting is the Chorus of a million worlds, a sprawling stellar empire that spreads across the galaxy. The players control characters struggling to survive in a wondrous melting pot of aliens, robots, worlds and factions. Thematically, Warpstar is a science fiction game of perilous adventure. However, Warpstar does not contain lots of explicit setting information, so you can use it with your favourite published or home-made adentures and settings. Instead, Warpstar aims to give you a simple and concise set of rules that you can shape as you need.

Warpstar uses the same games engine as Warlock!, adapted for science fiction gaming.

I've bought Warpstar from a friend, so i can't post my review here, since I haven't bought the book on this platform...
But I've written a review of Warpstar!, the neo-clone of WH40k. TLDR: I really liked it. Check on my blog if you wanna know why ;-)

Hi Greg! Is there any chance of a Black & White POD now that the Premium Color has more or less doubled in price?

The book does not really differentiate aliens from humans. It says players can make alien characters but it has no real mechanical change.

Not as such - creatures are defined very simply in Warpstar - just a stat block and some special abilities. There are plenty of aliens in bestiary.

Do you guys think this game would be suitable for running a game with themes and vibes like the d100 Rogue Trader game?

Hello, firstly thanks for the work on this rpg. I want to point out that the art is fantastic, you should exemplify that with a higher res pdf. At the moment it becomes pixelated with even moderate zooming in. This goes especially for the cover art pdf; I'm sorry, but it's a shame. Thank you!

I'm confused about the effect of the Jack of All Trades talent. What is the purpose of having a Career skill at rank 4? You have all skills at rank 4 or higher anyway. You would never use such a skill in place of any other skill.

Career skills aren’t used in place of adventuring skills, they are used for things not covered by those skills. So if I’m a cook and have a ‘cook’ career skill, I can use it to create tasty meals. Without that career skill, I don’t have skill in that. The talent lets you act like you have had lots of careers in your life.

Okay, I see. So even though you have at least 4 in all skills, you don't have ANY ranks in anything else. And that includes career specialties. That makes sense. Thanks for the fast responses.

I'm eager to play this game. I stream solo campaigns on Twitch. Rolled up a character with Evil Eye and 13 Luck last night, plus the Warp Touched career. Gonna go wreak some terror.

Very late to this here warped party, but what is your twitch channel called? This sounds like a very interesting character to someone who just discovered Warpstar! but hasn't purchased the book yet (blasted Covid economy!). I would love to see how it plays, especially considering it seems that everything by the publisher has a solid 5-star review!

Hey, I have a question about increasing stamina via the increase of the Career Skill. Technically you could start with a Career Skill as low as 6 (picking 4 in all 5 skills, then investing your skill points at character creation). It can also begin as high as 8 (picking 6 in all 5 skills, then investing your skill points at character creation). Do you get additional stamina at character creation for having a career skill higher than 6? Like +1 for 7 and +2 for 8?

No, only when you advance the career skill from where it started after play begins.

Read 2000 AD and you will very quickly see where the original version of Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader got its inspiration from. In particular check out the stories Strontium Dog, Rogue Trooper and Nemesis the Warlock. In fact many of the writers and artists working for GW at the time were also working for 2000AD.

That's what Warpstar takes its inspiration from.

I think it's referring to the old school British style of RPG ,which was more 'weird' than the conventional RPGs of the time. I could be wrong though

Way back in the hoary old days of the 80's DnD Was not nearly so dominant in the UK as it was in the US. So British Gamers did play DnD (which was actually distributed by Games Workshop at the time), or they had a number of homegrown options for roleplaying. The most popular of these were: Advanced Fighting Fantasy and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.

Warlock and Warpstar take inspiration from both games.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
