Deviant: The Renegades

Selected Option:

Remade

You woke up…different. Someone changed you; on a slab, an operating table, an altar. By luck or by fate, you escaped. Now you’re hunted by the ones who made you, and they hold all the cards but one: they don’t know that a fire burns within you because of what they did. They don’t know that you’re hunting them.

Broken

The Divergence stripped you of your humanity, cracked open your soul. Its wounds will never heal. You are Broken — not like a toy lying in a limp pile on the floor but like a glass bottle, all sharp edges and jagged, cutting shards. Anyone who comes close to you bleeds — your enemies, but also your few friends.

Renegades

Though alienated from humanity, you are not alone. Other Deviants have suffered as you have suffered. They hate the conspiracies that made you as much as you do. Together, you will stand against them. Together, you will make them pay!

This book contains:

  • The complete guide to playing a Deviant in the Chronicles of Darkness — from psychics to cyborgs, from freaks of nature to abominations of science.
  • Customizable powers and drawbacks to accommodate a breathtakingly diverse range of character concepts.
  • Rules for portraying the many faceless conspiracies that make up the Web of Pain.
  • Four example settings across the world, from Ankara to Delaware, each with its own unique conspiracies entangled in the Web of Pain.

Also available now from Onyx Path Publishing:

Dearly BleakDearly Bleak (A Deviant: The Renegades Novella)

Once, there was a boy named Dearly Bleak. That's not his birth name, but that's not the point. Dearly became so deathly ill, his parents allowed a smiling self-help cult to turn their son's body into a home for a cosmic maggot god.

"Ever the praises to the Conqueror Worm!"

"Ever the praises to the Crawling Library!"

"The Knowledge that Eats!"

"The Broodsac Sultan!"

Dearly was healed, and then everyone screamed. For a time, Dearly found himself all on his own, though never ever alone. One day, to his delight, he found fellow misfits and deviants like him.

This is the story of the boy and the Worm and what they are willing to do to the conspiracies that threaten their found family. This is the story of a boy who likes toys, lunchboxes, and catching bullfrogs. But most of all, he likes brains.

Looks like TMNT meets the WoD? That sounds awesome.

Just wondering if there are more books in the works for Deviant? This take on the CoD and dark supers is one of the coolest games I've seen in a long time and I hope we get more content for it.

No, it's a Chronicles of Darkness game so is using a variation of the CoD system.

I'm pretty new to the whole Chronicles/World of Darkness deal, but do I need Chronicles of Darkness to play Deviant: The Renegades?

No. Each of the core books includes the full rules. There’s a couple merits and subsystems that are in the CofD book, but it’s not necessary.

I love it. It's one of the most interesting ones from Onyx Path yet!

Just a few notes about the character sheet, though:

* The character sheet has the standard Attributes on the normal scale of 1-5, but Deviants can have Superhuman Attributes which go well above 5. I feel like there should have been some way of noting the character's base ratings and a second track for any Superhuman ratings, so I can see those at a quick glance without having to flip over to the Variations.
* The fillable PDF sheet has you marking V's in the boxes instead of filling them. It's just a visual, cosmetic thing but it doesn't look right to me and makes it harder on me to tell my ratings at a glance.
* Text font and size is a little inconsistent across multiple fields, and tends to be on the small side where it should be bigger (or at least altering based on how much I type).

I really like what I've seen so far in the book. I wanted a superhuman RPG with more crunch than all the PBTA options and this fits the bill.

It's a really interesting setting, with a major problem. The Autourgics should not be a choice for players. In a game about conspiracy and revenge, but as an RPG it's a collaborative social game, putting a choice in there that instantly makes issues within the group, bad idea.

This makes no sense. A character that thought it was doing something good can very well later find out the consequences and decide to join the Renegades.

You need to read their full page treatment if you think that.
Have a read of the sample Autourgics there (I like the second one).

As for conspiracy and revenge, Autourgics become victims and targets of conspiracies same as other Remade. They may be their own Progenitor, but that doesn't mean they have no one to blame for what they've become or no one to take vengeance upon.

So Promethean expanded and the themes and background are different?

They're similar in some sense, but Deviant has different core themes than Promethean.

The differences between Deviants and Prometheans are myriad, and very fundamental.
Prometheans are primarily concerned with the quest to become human - for Deviants, that door is closed (and the bridge is burned, and the river is made of acid). The game is not about a quest for regaining your humanity - it's about vengeance, it's about already having been a person but becoming wrenched from your life and crushed in the grinding gears of a dehumanizing organization that considered you nothing more than expendable, raw materials.

The themes of social isolation in Deviant stem from your character having been Broken and Remade into a monstrosity. Your own "powers" Other you.
Something happened to you and now you can't assume a normal life anymore.

Promethean is about the Tin Man's yearning for a heart.

Deviant is about Dr Jekyll, Elevan, Hulk and Electro's...See more

It's actually closer to Demon or Changeling with the characters having escaped the monsters who took their humanity (although those 'monsters' are more human than in the other games) and now fighting back against those same monsters while attempting to avoid being recaptured/neutralised by them. Promethean is about claiming a humanity you never had, Deviant is about tearing avenging yourself on the SOBs who took your humanity you can feel yourself losing.

Although there's nothing to say that the 'Progenitor' who 'Created' one couldn't 'Break' the other.

Pablo:
Actually, Deviant's roots can be traced back to a 90s White Wolf product called "Freak Legion", the player's guide to Fomori.
(I seriously *don't* recommend looking the Freak Legion book up if you don't know it - it was written in White Wolf's "Shock-and-BLaAarGH!" days).

Fomori were Werewolf: The Apocalypse antagonists.
In general, they were humans who became possessed by a bane, but more relevantly they were often the symbiotic, mutated super-soldiers for the E-e-e-e-e-evil megacorp Pentex (the "First Team").

Deviant is not "Fomori: Chronicles of Darkness 2021 version", and it's far, far more mature and infinitely better written than that awfulness was - but it definitely has roots in that product.

Also, Deviant is very different to Promethean.
Promethean is about a construct's quest to attain humanity - Deviant is about people-turned-monsters, hunter-hunted and being a person who is dehumanized...See more

Ok, now I may need to look at this Fomori book.

Just kidding, I'm tired of bad taste in rpg books.

You are not. This has a 'dark superhero' feel. If you ever saw the Dark Angel TV show, that's pretty much EXACTLY what we have going here. Deviant is a dark mirror of Hunter. And I love it.

I was thinking classic Kamen Rider. Haven't read Deviant yet, but the idea of being made into something inhuman by an evil conspiracy and using the powers they gave you against them is a pretty solid Rider theme.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
