About FlexAI

FlexAI is an attempt to model and simulate monster and NPC behavior in combat and social encounters.  It scales in complexity from very simple to as complex as you as a GM would like it to be.  It can be used in any tabletop roleplaying game with zero preparation time.

The system takes only a few minutes to learn, is easy and quick to use, and can enhance any tabletop roleplaying combat experience.

This massive resource contains hundreds of detailed scenarios to generate dynamic, contextually-appropriate creature behavior in various combat circumstances.

Over 860 tables, tens of thousands of combinations and permutations, and yet all it takes is a few minutes and a roll of a d100 to imbue you adventures with intelligence and fascination!

Hi,
I have the same comment as Randall, but I am not sure you have answered it. For example, the Flex AI table for a Normal Fresh Soldier in Context A give Attack major/Major Surge for a result of 84-86. Referring then back to the Combat Surge Summary Table in the Introduction (p. 21 in my pdf), there are four types of Major Surges for the Main Attack: +2, +4, +5 and +6 Attack. Which one applies?
Thanks!

The different results correspond to how powerful the monster is. In their bestiaries every monster has 4 Stat blocks depending on how strong a version of a given monster a GM wants to use in a given scenario, and those different blocks correspond to the different surge answers.

If you're not using your their bestiary just use your best judgement as to which bonus should apply to a given creature.

Hi Manfred--As Jason R notes, pretty much. There are rough guidelines as to what levels / CRs correspond to the difficulty bands, but it really should scale to what you as the D/GM have a feel for. These days for my somewhat large Pathfinder group, I use:
Low band: 1-6
Moderate band: 6-10
Advanced band: 11-14
Elite band: 15+

...where the # above is either the APL, or the ~CR of an encounter/critter.

There's a free PDF that goes into the whole Quadded Difficulty thing in a little more detail:

Hope that helps!

FYI love the guide book but with this why would you protect the sheets makes it very difficult to incorporate macros additionally putting 0-26 in a single cell is also difficult to use in programming.

Sad that I paid money for something that really isn't any more help.

Hi Randall! Any publisher worth their salt protects their work; it's fairly ubiquitous to lock things down either in a PDF or in a particularly malleable form like Excel.

If you want to build off of the contents, it's straightforward to copy/paste into a macro-enabled workbook where you can build whatever you wish off of the valuable data presented. I know of several folks who have already done so for click-quick results during game sessions.

In terms of the "0-26", those are the values that are presented in the book itself.
What data would you prefer?

Those who have built off of this as a starting point have used Excel functions to generate start/endpoints off of the ranges, so that might work depending on what you're trying to do.

I'm honestly not sure what you have in mind, but as the entire reason I published this in Excel form was to make sure users could do pretty much whatever they wished to with the data that might make it easier...See more

I am creating a user form to pull data from the tables...being in excel did save me a bit of time. had to reformat all the entries lookups and excel don't like "-". All the ranges need to be split to create solid data tables (Not impossible but tedious). More to the point only the higher value it used. Again it was helpful so no worries.

How do you determine what level of surge or lull? The AI tables just say major or minor am I missing something?

Hiya,

RE: Surge or Lull, minor/major are the levels (see the description in the book itself); each applies differently depending on the resulting action. E.g., for Flee, a surge will increase movement speed.

Glad to hear it's working out! Thanks for the feedback!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
