Fantastic work. Gorgeous artwork. A great deal of variety and a great source of inspiration.
Some stunts are really well thought and help rack up the tension.
The tools given to build your own monsters are amazing.

My only regret is that I didn't take the PDF. I bought it in a hobby store for 60€ (which is more expensive than any Fate book I own, and 4x the price of the PDF). Though it's an amazing book, I can't use the artworks in online games, which isa shame since they are so damn good.

Greetings! I'd like to say I loved this product and your approach to modelling creatures, but I have a couple of questions:

- I've given the players a free invocation of the Shaken and Hurt aspects whe a monster gains them. Is this correct? The creatures seemed to take a lot of punishment because of this choice and died very quickly.

- which approach does a creature defend with? I defaulted to them defending with Quick and attacking with Violent in physical conflicts, unless they were hidden or stealthy (in which case I allowed them to attack with Quick). What's the correct way to do it?

Hi, Mattia! Thanks for the support! I'm glad that you liked the book.

Actually, PCs must pay a fate point to invoke Shaken, Hurt, and Giving in aspects — no free invocation unless they create an advantage to receive a free invocation.

A creature always defends itself in the way it is most efficient. That way, it uses its highest approach unless the approach doesn't make sense for the defending action (so it will use the second most efficient approach and so on), like an animal that sometimes defends itself by attacking, sometimes fleeing, and sometimes roaring with fury to frighten danger.

Had to support this product. It's a book of beauty and I will totally buy a PoD version when it becomes available. Plus its nice to see more FATE support in the world.

Thank you very much for your support. I'm glad you liked the book. I am making preparations for the PoD version, and It should be available in a few weeks or a couple of months. I'm hitting the schedule with the native English proofreader at the moment, thanks to sales.

I would love it ten times more if this was a POD product. Any plans to offer a printed product?

I will use the money from the first PDF sales to hire a native English proofreader before releasing the PoD version (the writers, proofreaders, and I are native Brazilian Portuguese).

Everyone who purchases the PDF now, will receive the updated PDF version via DriveThruRPG e-mail update system and will only need to pay for the printed version (softcover or hardcover).

The example looks like accelerated. Does it also go with skills?

Hey Gary. We create unique approaches to the monsters because most of them act irrationally or instinctively (different from the villains who use skills as outlined in Fate Core, Condesed, and FAE).

If you change monsters' approaches for skills, it doesn't affect monster rules (you may need to include the skill in the creature's stunt description).

So let's say I'm running Fate Condensed, which uses skills. And I want to use this monster? Do I have to convert it?

There is no need for your monster to use the same skill / approach list as your players. As long as they operate on the same scale it makes no difference. So maybe you roll violent vs athletics instead of fight against athletics. Same result.

Creature approaches are as compiled skill effects:

Horrible is like Empathy, Provoke, cruelly and horrifyingly. Violent is the aggressiveness of Fight, Shoot, and so on. The stunts were created using the Fate Core, Condesed, and Fate Horror Toolkit pattern (but overpowered because they are above-natural threats), and the aspects work as usual.

As long as you operate them on the same scale, there should be no problems. A creature can attack with Violent, and the player can defend with Athletics or Fight. It can attack or create an advantage with Horrible, and players can defend or overcome with Empathy, Provoke, or Will (depending on context). A player can create an advantage with Stealth, and the creature overcomes with Instinctive or Quick.

We create these approaches because we think better suited for monsters and simplify the amount of information the GM needs to handle during the session.

This explanation really helps me understand the example shown on the product page.
Especially, seeing your explanation of Horrible makes me picture of the wicked "mother" in the movie Tangled. She's absolutely manipulative in a horrible way using Empathy and Provoke.
I love it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
