The Darkened Hermitage

ADD TO WISHLIST >
October, 1933. As the Royal Canadian Mail steamship pulls onto the quiet lake, the seemingly interminable forest gives way, revealing the tiny hamlet pressed up against the shore, framed on all sides by the rugged mountains of backwoods Quebec. You wonder what could make someone want to live in such a dismal little town, seemingly built in defiance of God and Nature. A bitter autumn wind blows through you as you wrap your jacket tight and turn the Professor's cryptic letter over, looking at the hurried handwriting once more. What could it mean?

The Darkened Hermitage is a horror mystery scenario for 7th Edition Call of Cthulhu, set in the forested hinterlands of Quebec, Canada. The investigators have come to speak to Dr. Ezekiel Freeman, an eccentric historian and folklorist as well as a true believer in a wide range of esoteric theories. The investigators arrive to the small hamlet of Le Fidèle to find out that something has gone horribly wrong - and the next boat to Montréal doesn't come for another two weeks. The forested mountains press in like the walls of a prison cell, and the investigators are trapped in this valley with whoever - or whatever - is responsible. To survive, the investigators must work to uncover this valley's dark secrets - and soon. Who can they trust?

This scenario is designed for 3-5 players and it should take around six hours to complete. The scenario works well as a standalone investigation or as part of a campaign. The scenario is highly flexible, and the setting and investigator hooks can be modified to fit many different play groups.

What's included in this scenario?
- A 48-page PDF, fully bookmarked for ease of use
- A 15-page scenario (extensively playtested) that mixes classic investigation with B-movie horror action
- A diverse cast of 5 pre-generated characters with fully detailed backstories and an investigator organization
- 11 Handouts, as well as two retro-style maps and two house floor plans
- An original Mythos deity, tome, and artifact to add to your campaign

I've looked at various scenarios set in Québec for different games over time, and I think this is the best one by a fair margin. Haven't run it yet, but I certainly will. I think it works well enough as written that I pretty much wouldn't have to change anything to run it for a bunch of native Québécois.

I do have two minor corrections/nitpicks:
1) The first is really minor, but the provincial police wasn't called the SQ at the time, most likely. I've actually found conflicting dates for this, but the SQ's own site points to 1938 as the year it became known as the "Sûreté provinciale du Québec". Not that most players are likely to know this, but I've recently done actual archives research on 1930s Québec and stumbled on the fact they didn't call it the SQ back then. It would just have been the "Police provinciale"/provincial police.

2) "Saint Francis" in the church's name should be "Saint François". A fair number of things in Québec...See more

Thanks for your feedback! I'm quite happy to hear that the setting rings true, that's very high praise. I appreciate both the notes: for whatever reason it didn't occur to me to translate the church's name.

As you point out, the bilingualism of the town is a contrivance for a variety of reasons, but it was my attempt to balance the unfamiliarity of the setting for the presumed-anglo (usually American) investigators with the practical need for them to be able to read the notes. It's the natural dilemma dealing with foreign languages in this game. This scenario was my first and if I return to translate it (which I'd like to), I would definitely make some revisions. As for the Judge, I'm not sure: I think I'd suggest something like "Le juge fringant" or "Le sémillant juge."

Thanks for your kind words & helpful feedback, I hope you enjoy the scenario. I'm not writing at the moment, but there will certainly be more Québec scenarios to come, so stay tuned!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
