Ironsworn: Starforged
by Jonathan W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/26/2022 20:33:01

A brilliant step forward from an already impressive game, Ironsworn: Starforged has easily become my favorite solo or group tabletop game to date. This one hit all the right notes for me: the fiction and the dice rolls in the game weave together seamlessly rather than happening to exist in the same space, the built in oracles allow you to build a universe whole cloth at moments notice, and I can play it in the flexible built in setting or any other setting I can think of with only the slightest of flavor changes.

My only criticism is that this game might cause the rest of your TTRPG library to start collecting dust. 5/5

Ironsworn Lodestar (Reference Guide)

A great reference book with some nice new additions; the extra attribute layouts are a nice way to smoothly bend the game into a lighter and more exploratory feel or a (more) grim dangerous one.

A great gameplay loop with an interesting core setting; Ironsworn is a perflect blend of narrative-focused storytelling and flexible but solid gameplay mechanics that reinforce eachother rather than happening to exist in the same space. Impressive depth for a game that could be played almost entirely with a character sheet and 3 dice, would buy again!

I started gaming in the 1970s and am absolutely gobsmacked when I see how awesome and creative designers can be. This is a stark world, a hard world to game in – but one completely of my own crafting. I love how thoughtfully and gently I am read through the creative rocess to build an adventuring world. THANK YOU for this.

I've been playing Starforged from the earliest days and before that Ironsworn. Oh how I wish I had found Ironsworn and Starforged from the beginning of my solo RPG experience. It's a complete and self contained solo system for gamers who want a strong narratively driven role playing game. I am constantly amazed at where the oracles take me and the scenes and images I conjour in response to a few words. The greatest compliment I can pay it is that I have not bent or adapted the system at all and I still love playing it. I have added plenty of additional oracles and tables plus lots of background reading, but the core rules are pretty much perfect.

I kickstarted this after falling in love with Ironsworn. Getting the physical books I was immediately blown away by the quality of the art and the immaculate and clean layout. The companion book and the Asset deck as well were a joy to leaf through. Now all this sounds fine, but how is the system I hear you ask. It is an improved Ironsworn system, so Shawn Tomkin took something already pretty darn good, and polished it even further. I'm looking forward to enjoying this book for years to come. Only if I had a 6th star to give...

Ironsworn: Delve
by Theodore S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/01/2022 12:33:30

As is the case with the Ironsworn core platform, Delve is brilliantly concieved and executed. Delve essentially brings Ironsworn underground, expanding moves, settings, monsters, and oracles to cover the thrills, glories, and tragedies of dungeon-crawling. Delve shares Ironsworn's carefully calibrated balance and has inspired many hours of play. Most importantly, the mechanics serve the action in the game, and not vice-versa. The player's imagination is front-and-center. Top marks.

Ironsworn is an inspired and carefully tuned platform where the mechanics serve the action in the game, and not vice-versa. Everything about Ironsworn is designed to inspire the player's imagination. There is a very good balance among the various moves and the possibility of outcomes ranging from great to terrible. The supplemental material describing the Ironlands and its inhabitants is creative and well-thought-out. This is a superior product.

Ironsworn: Delve
by Dustin H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/26/2022 15:23:59

If you are reading this and own Ironsworn. BUY DELVE. It only improves Ironsworn-in ways far beyond I would have expected. If you are reading this and don't own Ironsworn-go try Ironsworn. It is free. After you fall in love with that game. You will, come back to BUY DELVE. Not only will you not be dissapointed, but it is a great way to support the free Ironsworn system.

At the $12.50 price point Delve is worth buying just for the oracles and tables within. You don't even need to be playing Ironsworn to get use out of a lot of the content in this book.

Ironsworn

I can't say enough about how great this game is. Shawn Tomkin is a true master of the ttrpg craft (especially gmless). Ironsworn is so well done that I think we will look at it as the grandfather of all great dmless ttrpgs in the future. After playing Ironsworn I was unsure how it could even be improved upon (until I played Starforged, the sci-fi spiritual successor of Ironsworn). The rulebook can seem daunting at first glance, but it is a very easy read, and the rules are far more simple than they may appear. Most of the book is dice tables/oracles, good rpg advice, and further rules clarification for those who need it/come across a unique situation. The actual rules are quick to read. Ironsworn is as much a guidebook to good ttrping/storytelling as it is a rules system. This is the next evolution of PbtA. If you're a PbtA fan-must buy. If you're not, still check it out.

Michael: Have you reached out to DriveThruRPG on this issue? They are very helpful and responsive when it comes to missing books. Ironsworn: Starforged
by Shaun S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/10/2022 22:31:07

Starforged is the absolute pinnacle of solo role-playing, science-fiction role-playing, and narrative gaming. The system is elegant and the various moves are flexible enough to provide for most any type of action. The Paths (kind of like classes) can be combined to make the kind of character that suits your imagination. The Truths section helps you to define the particular kind of universe you want to play in. I was able to create a literal Biblical apocalypse, with the very real possibility that the Forge in which my characters exist might be some astronomical equivalent of Hell. But you could as easily have a hopeful setting, or something like Firefly, or the Expanse, or whatever suits your preferences. The mechanics for Connections, Journeys, and Challenges all use the same underlying mechanics, allowing players to get on with the action without having to constantly flip through the book (there's a short reference guide included if you need to do that, though). The real gem among these excellent rules are the Scene Challenges and Clocks - mechanics that help to create some real tension. Will you hack into the system before the guards arrive? Can you make it to the rendezvous before the drop ship leaves without you? Anything prolonged task or challenge with an uncertain outcome can be made more exciting with this feature. And we cannot overlook the absolutely GORGEOUS presentation. Full-color throughout and the artwork is beautiful and really helps players to visualize the setting. If you buy ONE game, ever, it should be this one. I'm not even kidding and if you disagree, come fight me.

Ironsworn Lodestar (Reference Guide)
by Dave T. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/04/2022 01:01:44

Ironsworn Lodestar, in my opinion, is the single most underrated resource & toolkit book I've picked up in the past 6-7 years of any TTRPG system. It's that fantastic, and I sincerely encourage anyone to check this out. The best part of it is, while obviously it is made as a supplement to use for Ironsworn, the enormous amount of GM guidance, random table generators, and worldbuilding tools can be applied to literally any TTRPG. If I had any two resources that can immediately be ported into any TTRPG setting, it would be Worlds Without Numbers, and Ironsworn Lodestar. Both are perfect.

Lodestar shines in that it gives tons of GM guidance for the specific PBtA (or PBtA adjacent/influence) Ironsworn game, and does a FANTASTIC job of presenting overview sections of all move types, categories and descriptions...that are well laid out, ultra intuitive to understand, and all locating in one easy to find doc. I honestly wish game designers made something this intuitive for every system, because more complex systems are dying for something like this, both for GM and player purposes, you can just flip it open and immediately find what you need for any Ironsworn game.

It equally shines as a generic/not tied to Ironsworn resource that is chalk full of random generators for everything from plot, worldbuilding, PC character building, character feelings and personalities, backstories, locations, villages, celebrations & disasters in villages or cities, random encounters, random events...all with tones stretching between happy to sad, to dark and spooky, to chivalrous, to joyful and celebratory to depressing or true danger or tragedy. It also has a fantastic section for name creation of both PCs, NPCs and creature types, as well as locations. Could be used for just about any system and setting that involves high or low fantasy, steampunk, or history.

It's just awesome, and for a resource so inexpensive, everyone should grab a copy. Kudos to the remarkably talented author Shawn Tompkin for creating Ironsworn, Starforged, and this excellent Lodestar resource!

Ironsworn: Starforged
by Sean G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/17/2022 16:56:42

Just started playing with a group of friends and everyone is having a blast. The freedom this system gives you to shape the narrative, coupled with the oracles and evocative snippets of lore, set us up for an amazing co-op game from session 1. The refinements that Starforged has over Ironsworn really smooth out the gameplay.
