Hostile Setting
by Chad B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/17/2023 15:30:25

This is very much my favorite 2D6 Space setting, I floated though using this with Cepheus Deluxe + Solo and now along with Hostile Solo. Most 2D6 stuff plays well with others - I don't see any problems using this setting with any game system you prefer.

All of Zozer's books are well layed out, good looking and easy to read.

There's a printer-friendly copy that mostly just removes the background coloring - it still has a number of tables with green-on-black print. If 2D6 space was my main RPG, I'd definately spring for hard copies.

Star-Trek-ish games can be fun, but I love the more old-school expecting to die often mentality here and it is married well with the types of things that space travellers would be doing in a more realistic universe driven by capitolism.

Finally, the setting is well supported - Zozer has a number of free and paid supplements here on DTRPG - my favorite is probably Crew Expendable. Each adds a nice chunk of ready to use material and expands the Hostile setting well.

If you like Aliens and play 2D6 Space RPGs, this book is a no-brainer!

Clash of Steel
by Todd S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/10/2023 07:28:13

I've been a fan of the combat system in Zenobia for a long time. I've even attempted to integrate it into other 2D6 games, but with my lack of game design knowledge it has never quite worked out. Thankfully Zozer Games has taken that system and made a "generic" game out of it with a broader selection of backgrounds and equipment than what is found in either Zenobia or 43AD. I'm not going to give up though. I still plan to integrate at least something similar to this combat system into other games. Until then I have some playing to do.

HOSTILE Situation Report 006 - Hunted
by Jason I. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/02/2023 15:23:34

The world of Predator comes to Alien (I mean HOSTILE). A great bit of business to use to spin a tale of desperate, frustrating cat & mouse where you can hide but can't run...or you can choose to be true and make your final stand.

In the hands of the right (wrong?) DM, a mean bit of business.

HOSTILE Situation Report 006 - Hunted
by Eric F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/31/2023 16:18:15

"Pray you don't meet this intelligent alien foe, born to hunt, equipped with high-tech weapons and able to move about unseen. You are being herded, picked off one-by one - purely for the sport of an Unseen Hunter... " Hostile Rpg one of those games that depends upon it's monster as much as it's atmosphere. And we've got an Eighties classic done in the style of the Hostile rpg. This encounter even follows the first film; "The Unseen Hunter is an intelligent, humanoid alien that has a culture of hunting alien species for sport. Humans have sometimes become prey for these beasts. They have access to high technology and will arrive on planet in a small starship, capable of being cloaked invisibly when landed. Often, these aliens hunt alone, as a mark of bravery, and carry out reconnaissance to locate a worthy opponent, either alone or in a group. " So where would you use 'The Hunted' encounter?! Well, first of all 'Hunted' is an experienced Hostile, Cepheus, or even as a old school Science Fiction 2d6 encounter. Zozer Games provides everything the DM needs to run 'Hunted' but where in the Hostile universe?! The perfect place to run 'Hunted' is actually is the alien jungle world of Tau Ceti! A war torn colony, alien jungles, interstellar conflict, blood & violence all call to the alien hunter of the 'Hunted'.

Hunted is perfect to drop on a group of experienced Hostile players PC's & watch them scatter like so much skinned targets! The alien hunter of 'The Hunted' encounter could be the perfect foe to hunt your favorite group of experienced marines in your Hostile campaign. Thanks for reading our review

Abyss
by Eric F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/03/2022 11:20:18

"You think this hyper-populated island on this miserable waterworld is bad? The crime? The corruption? The lack of privacy and housing? The rationing and queues? You hate it because its all you know ... Me? I've got another six month tour on the seabed starting tomorrow. Six months almost two miles down, breathing stale air, no sun, no freedom, no free-time, and just the same twelve people to talk to. Now, how bad is this island again?" - Crawler driver Hilton Varez, Clan Bakar

A supplement for the Hostile RPG and Cepheus Engine.

"Abyss is an overcrowded world, a world where the most prized possession is land and real estate. It is a waterworld, a single planet covered by a single shallow ocean, the only land available for settlement is the tiny island of Vasundhara as well as a scatter of small island chains. Life can be hard on the planet, poverty and squalor are commonplace, wealth and living space is held as a privilege by a few, whilst the millions compete for survival inside the noisy, crowded, trash-filled, dirty, cramped and crime-ridden ‘Warrens’. Much of the island is intensely urbanised, skyscrapers and apartment blocks jostle with factories and sky-high shopping centres. "

Abyss by Paul Elliot from Zozer Games is an underwater world & supplement that hits two high marks. One a world of cyberpunk style corporate intrigue & danger this is one where we could easily translate over a Zaibatsu rpg campaign. Two Abyss succeeds as an alternative venue for PC's looking for the big bonuses & an another avenue of pay for their PC's.

There have been other water borne & underwater supplements for old school Traveller rpg style worlds. But nothing like Abyss brings to the table with various factions in control of the underwater world, rules for underwater combat, mining, and more! Abyss is a world of high corporate backstabbing & the fate of the planet's resources hang in the balance.

All of the factions in Hostile are here in spades plus new major corporations interested in dividing up this oceanic paradise. The world sea based life forms seem almost entirely responsible to the nine million colonizers who have descended on this water based sea world. As the colonists try to extract the mineral wealth the planet seeks to end the lives of those on this watery world.

The islands in Abyss are rife with adventure possibilities but below the water?! Well that's a whole other world of Hostile possibility where you can strike it rich or be eaten by an alien underwater life form. Abyss has rules, NPC's, equipment, and more all for underwater 2d6 Hostile or Cepheus Engine rpg adventuring & action.

Abyss is the head for a tough industry & the PC's are going to have to be just as tough as the underwater enviroment that they face. Abyss may be exo planet but it's an exo planet with a difference. And that's the amount of danger as well adversity that the PC's face. Given Abyss's layout, cartography, writing , and more are well up the Hostile rpg's general standards easily. Paul Elliot as well as the Hostile contributors know their stuff Abyss is fast becoming a Hostile favorite. And it's an adventure supplement that I'll be inflicting on my Hostile players coming up! So is Abysss worth getting?! Absolutely and there's a few reasons why! This takes your Hostile rpg PC's into an unfamilar enviroment, there's rules for generating brand new PC's and NPC's to interact with, the PC's have the chance to make a difference in the corporate environs of Abyss, & for the nine million reasons located on the surface of Abyss. Did I mention that there's the chance that your PC might strike it rich or be eaten!?
Abyss is a great addition to the Zozer games product line of Hostile rpg books! Thanks reading at our review. Eric Fabiaschi Swords & Stitchery blog Want more OSR action?! Please Subscribe https://swordsandstitchery.blogspot.com/

Hostile Setting
by Shane F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/29/2022 16:01:47

I love this setting as it captures the feel of films like Blade Runner or Alien. I've always felt most Science Fiction settings are inconsistent. Space Travel is too easy and cheap making a trip between stars as easy as driving to the shops. This is far more believable. The cost is ridiculous and it's extremely hostile and dangerous. IT's distopian future where corporations rule and the little people are pawns and canon fodder. Brilliant and fresh.

Colonial Freighter
by Eric F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/08/2022 15:38:56

If there's one ship that get's a work out in our various 2d6 campaigns its the Colonial Freighter from Zozer games. Why? The sheer volume & variety of these ships is what does it; "On worlds with low-populations and few port facilities, any colonial supply ship has to carry with it a suite of cargo handling equipment. The Tharsis Aerospace Argosy is a premier example of this class of ship - the ‘colonial support vessel’ (CSV)."

"The Argosy has been designed to carry a varied mix of cargoes, from passengers to pallets cargo containers, out-sized industrial machinery, vehicles and various types of chemicals and fuels. It is able to land on a bare-rock landing pad and off-load its entire (and diverse) cargo where there are no port facilities. This 5,000-ton starship is fully deck-planned, and includes four variants, two scenario outlines and two new types of vehicles."

When you get into decade corporate long colonial movements such as what we have in the black frontiers of space in Hostile & other 2d6 space based games. The supply & infrastructure lines are the back bone of campaigns. All throughout history we continue to see such expansions needed a star ship that can handle such endevours. And this is where the Colonial Frieghter really shines in my opinion. Not only does the Zozer Games Colonial Freighter shine in this regard but it makes sense that these regards but it's a perfect example of the campaign asthetic that Hostile excels at. The Zozer Games Colonial Freighter not only makes an excellent adventure backbone and setting but a home base point for an adventuring party as well.

With the number of varieties of the 'Tharsis Aerospace Argosy' allows the DM to configure the space craft into the role that they need. From colony craft to military troop transport the 'Tharsis Aerospace Argosy' does it all! And does it well. But these are also going to be the space craft wrecks that player's marine PC's are going to encounter. These ships in some cases literally are the vital supply line ships going through hyperspace.

Zozer Games Colonial Freighter's ships are literally colonial & military assets from the ground up for planet side so that destroying one or two of these ships is functioning act of interstellar war between corporations. But is Zozer Games Colonial Freighter book actually good & worth the download?! In a word yes! Zozer Games Colonial Freighter by Paul Elliot takes the usual colonial starship from Cepheus Engine rpg & turns it into both a literal interstellar adventure backdrop & campaign turning point. Paul Elliot takes his usual wit & wisdom of starship design & turns it into a functioning campaign piece for both a Hostile or any old school 2d6 rpg Science Fiction rpg campaign.

Tau Ceti
by Eric F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/03/2022 01:23:16

Tau Ceti By Paul Elliot From Zozer Games For The Hostile Rpg is a war campaign plain & simple! And it's a glorious war campaign waiting to happen. If you've ever wondered what the marines & ground forces in Aliens look like dealing pain in the field nows your chance! The author's intro hits the high points of this forty one page adventure/ campaign for the Hostile rpg; "Tau Ceti is a tortured world, fought over by the US-led Community of American States and by Chinese colonists backed by the People’s Republic of Guandong, on Earth. Tau Ceti is an unashamed stand-in for the Vietnam War, an interstellar conflict fought on a jungle world that kills almost as many Americans as the TLA do. Any reminder, reflection or nod towards the Vietnam War is all intentional. I once wrote a history book in the 90’s called Vietnam: Conflict & Controversies… Because of this, a lot of Vietnam War tropes, concepts and story ideas will port-over to this campaign easily. Here are some campaign ideas" And Tau Ceti hits those high points so well! The world is highly detailed and just the kind of powder keg that you can drop your player's PC's into the middle of! The prose is solidly done, the cartography hits the mark, and the adventure opportunities are on point here! There's a real feeling of impending doom that rattles through this conflict waiting to happen. Tau Ceti is a brutal world with some incredibly dangerous encounters waiting to take on your player's PC's. And Tau Ceti takes the conflict seriously showcasing some of Paul Elliot's designing chops right outta of the gate. Reading through & understanding the author's motives & ideas for his Hostile rpg reflects the fuse that is Tau Ceti . There's gonna be a lot of death and destruction in this campaign and it could well be the Hostile Rpg's intergalatic Vietnam waiting to happen. End result?! The player's PC's are going to be in for a rough ride from Hell! So hang on! Thanks for reading our review Eric Fabiaschi Swords & Stitchery blog Want more 2d6 OSR goodness?! Basically it's every black pill science fiction movie trope, zero new gound explored just plain predictable and dull. Honestly nothing that hasn't been done before. I can't even find any new ideas to use in more interesting settings. Also even though this is supposed to be a setting book there is a huge chapter of ship design rules. rules, why is this in here? This is supposed to be a setting book and now I'm paying for rules I didn't want. Definitely regretting this purchase.

Creator Reply:
Hi Andrew, I’m sorry that you were disappointed with Hostile. You are, of course, quite right. It is a derivative setting, and although there are a few new ideas in there, it does repackage ideas, concepts, themes and setting ideas from those gritty 70s and 80s sci-if movies. But that’s the point of the game really, a retro-setting that takes that question “Is Outland, Alien, Bladerunner and Total REcall set in the same universe??” Our answer is “of course” and proceeds to take parts of those movies and smooth them, mould them, and build them back up together into a seamless universe. This won’t be for everyone, and it definitely sounds like its not your thing. If you’d like a refund, please let me know at paulelliottbooks@yahoo. com

Hostile Solo
by Shane F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/03/2022 09:50:24

As a fan of Paul's Solo for the Cepheus Engine I was excited by this book.

I expected it to be a straight port of the earlier book to the Hostile rules but there are some interesting additions.

The chapter on Randomised Interiors deserves a special mention as it enables you to create interesting space stations, ships or settlements.

The addition of Inspiration Tables is a valuable one which add colour and prevent the other oracles becoming repetitive.

There are many more campaigns and that means there's a lot of variety. The campaigns for Colony Survival, Mining and Troubleshooting add new tables and ideas so you can play in urban environments, in asteroid belts or under bio-domes.

Even if you are not following the suggested campaign structure you have more raw material for inspiration.

It seems better organised and there's more depth. If I had a criticism of the original it was that the missions quickly became repetitive but I think there's more in this version to spice it up and keep it interesting.

Overall I was a fan of the original and this is an improvement.

(To be clear I was given a copy of this publication but I don't think it has coloured my opinions.)

Orbital Platforms
by Eric F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/16/2022 10:56:57

"Not all colonists within the American Sector settle on the surface of hostile planets. Many work in the depths of space or in planetary orbits on artificial platforms or space stations. There are hundreds in use, varying wildly in size from the 600-ton Pioneer class to the 20,000-ton Bay class and up to the million-ton Morozov class giants. Their purpose varies as much as their size. Orbital platforms might serve as way stations for starship crews, they might be research bases, fuel refinery stations, defence bases, orbital construction yards, communication stations as well as sundry other types …"

" Throughout human-occupied space the most common form of orbital platform is the modular type. Most of these resemble a floating skyscraper, with an external surface cluttered with additional units, pipework, tankage and ancillary sections. Commonly these giant constructions come in identical pairs or threes, connected together by gantries, fixed docking mechanisms and service connections."

Orbital Platforms By Paul Elliot is a thirty four page set of essential guidelines for the Hostile Rpg & it's campaigns. This supplement is perfectly aligned for creating space borne platforms in Hostile around colony worlds, space craft bases, rifineries, etc. We get outlines for designing, creating, & fixing up various orbital platforms. Hostile rpg adventure & campaign options often call for orbital platforms and Orbital Platforms By Paul Elliott covers this in spades.

Artificial platforms or space stations are perfect for interstellar or plantary adventures. Orbital Platforms By Paul Elliott For The Hostile Rpg is the book with everything necessary to get you started with using these in Hostile. All of the guidelines, details, and even weaponry. This makes 'Orbital Platforms' an essential take for example the standard platform; "PIONEER CLASS 600-ton Utility Platform The Leyland-Okuda Pioneer is a general purpose industrial operations platform, a space station designed to serve as an operations center, drone control, fuel store or supply dump. Using a 600-ton standard hull (Hull 12, Structure 12) the Pioneer mounts a Matsuyama OKL-1 1 Gigawatt Fusion Reactor, it has no other drives, other than station-keeping reaction jets. Fuel tankage comprising 9 tons of liquid hydrogen provides coolant to the fusion reactor for 12 months of continuous operation. Adjacent to the bridge is a level-1 Okuda Brightstar computer mainframe; a standard sensor package is fitted. There are six staterooms provided for the crew. A cargo deck of 42 tons holds spare parts and supplies and 480-tons of fuel tank can be configured for the storage of liquid hydrogen fuel, helium-3 or even stocks of fresh water. Features include fuel processors that can create up to 20 tons of liquid hydrogen each day, a workshop and fuel transfer manifold, repair robots and a medbay. A 0.5-ton Workloader is carried on the cargo deck. The Pioneer has no ship’s vehicles. Up to two starships or small craft can dock with the station at once. The station has a crew of five: commander, chief sensor operator, medic, assistant sensor operator, engineer. These roles can be altered to suit the station’s role. A spare stateroom can be used double occupancy by two visitors. The Leyland Pioneer costs $80M."

These platforms were created using a combination of Hostile rpg's starship rules & Orbital Platforms By Paul Elliott's guidelines. Orbital Platforms examines every detail for these adventure points & places for Hostile. This makes Orbital Platforms By Paul Elliott far more indepth then you at first it might seem. Orbital Platforms By Paul Elliott is a stand alone book & therefore you don't need the Hostile starship rules. For the Hostile rpg, Orbital Platforms By Paul Elliott is one the essential books for Hostile. Because it throws the focus on these adventure locations & the guidelines or rules for creating them. It's compact and has everything that DM needs to take full advantage of Orbital Platforms By Paul Elliott is compact, easy to read, easy to create your own orbital adventure locations, & this all ties into the point of this supplement.

Orbital Platforms By Paul Elliott does exactly what it sets out to do, to create orbital & instellar platform locations that can be used as adventure locations & campaign points for the Hostile rpg or other 2d6 instellar rpg's. The material is well done, compact, to the point, reliable, and very well thought out! Thanks for reading our review Eric Fabiaschi Swords & Stitchery blog Want more OSR & Hostile action?! Hostile Solo
by David C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/26/2022 10:21:33

When Paul Elliott (Zozer Games) announced he was working on an update for SOLO (the Traveller/ Cepheus solo rules) I was looking forward to it with real anticipation. SOLO works really well and I used it to run The Currents of Space solo Game for 3 years. I thought that it would be an update and revision, removing Jump Drives and redesigning ship encounters (etc.) to match the gritty, retro-80’s feel of Hostile (and also planet design; something which is often missed is that the planet design system is not the same as in Traveller/ Cepheus; for example you can’t generate a multi-billion population on any of the colony worlds, neither can you generate a Class A starport, the best you can get is a Class B.) SOLO clocks in at 153 pages of excellence, but you do need setting rules and Game-system.

Paul has delivered big-time.

Hostile: Solo is an impressive 230 pages and offers a complete Game-system, task resolution, setting details and six campaign styles. A lot has been streamlined (character generation and world generation) but it is all 100% compatible with the Hostile Rules and Hostile Setting and all of the published setting books. The book is packed with fantastic artwork and plenty of examples. There are design notes and tables to quickly create bases, outposts, space platforms, starships and encounters.

Character Generation – I have put together a crew of 6 to try out a Shipping Campaign (Number 1 in the book – each campaign type has its own section with a set of dedicated tables.) Character creation for all six took 30 mins in total and already threw up some ideas and potential conflicts.) It is a design system rather than a ‘roll lifepath’, but as I said, you can use the full system if you want to.

The PDF is available now on DrivethruRPG, the Softback and hardback comes out in September from Zozer Games.

Hostile Solo
by Eric F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/24/2022 18:38:35

"Hostile Solo is a stand-alone solo roleplaying game set in a grim and gritty future, inspired by movies like Outland, Alien, Dark Star, Pitch Black, Event Horizon and The Thing. It allows a single player to create and play the roles of a group of blue-collar workers out in deep space, overcoming difficult challenges and facing unknown terrors. Although the name and the cover art suggest that the player will create only a single character, in fact the game is best played with a ‘crew’ of characters. Your crew will interact, fall-out, develop their own schemes and build bonds of friendship. Steer them through their chosen career; either asteroid mining, exploring, freight shipping and salvage, corporate troubleshooting, colony operations or US Marine interventions."

"Both full-colour and printer-friendly versions are provided. PRINT VERSION TO FOLLOW IN SEPTEMBER, Hardback and Softback. Please check the product Discussion Forum at that time. "

Sweet mother of God, I wasn't expecting the pdf rpg package that Paul Elliot dropped on me this morning. The Hostile Solo rpg is two hundred & thirty pages of conscisely laidout and entwined 2d6 solo rpg Hostile goodness! And it rocks! Hostile Solo brings you all of the Hostile rpg action that you can handle alone! This is a great rpg and clever at what it does. Where do one begin?! At the beginning with Hostile Solo, we get all of the world of Hostile introduction we can handle from career prospects, Earth in Hostile, quick sample bites of technologies, politic, the interstellar scene, etc. In other words everything you need to turn out a PC with several quick rolls of the 2d6 dice.

And there's something to remember that everything in Hostile Solo is designed to get you to play and this game is a love letter to the 2d6 system that gave it birth. You a bit of everything right from the start highly sectionalize, organized, & sampled out. So that the player ( that's you) can literally make a character from scratch as soon as you have the pdf. The layout is well done, the artwork captures the world of Hostile and the interstellar scene from work, to duty, etc. is layed out in spades.

Hostile Solo is a working man's or blue collar interstellar world where the hazards are there right in the front of the book. You can & will die repeatily within Hostile Solo and that's alright because's it's dead easy to create a PC's and Hostile Solo does a solid job of bringing the reality of your situation to you the reader. Paul Elliot has an easy & breezy sense of style about his writing & game design. The man has done many products over the years & it shows. Ian Stead, Shawn, Fisher,& Paul Elliott all handle the artwork like pro's giving a simple, effective, and forceful number of artwork pieces that showcases and yet, implies the menace of the world of Hostile.

And while other companies are moving in weird or strange rpg directions Zozer Games continues to impress with games such as Hostile Solo. Paul Elliot does a brilliant job of showcasing his chops by giving us the next generation of his Solo rpg in the form of Hostile Solo. The fact that this game allows you as the player to take charge of your own play, destiny, and 2d6 gaming means that you can chart out a whole Hostile campaign from the inside out. And this allows the DM to pull their own adventures apart as both the player & the DM. And while this isn't revolutionary it puts the pressure back on the DM where it belongs. And the fact that the author includes a print friendly version of the game means that he wants this game played tonight!

Hostile Solo is a game of our times designed with the asthetic to be played and used. This isn't a sit on the shelf or sidelines game. Hostile Solo is designed by the a man whose played lots & lots of 2d6 solo games and he's taken that experience into this his latest Hostile publishing project. And given the fact that it works with all of the Hostile rpg products that's an incredibly good bonus.

So inconclusion there's lots to like about Hostile Solo and it's great value for 20.00 for what you get. Hostile Solo is a complete rpg in every sense of the world. This book is all you need to get in on the ground floor of running your own Hostile adventures tonight!

The supplement line for Hostile is light years ahead of the other space horror games. Even tough it runs in a legacy systems (Cepheus Engine) it brings a great set of rules and lore to your space horror games. This supplement can be used alongside other space horror games and that was I was intially planning to do but I was amazed by the quality of the Hostile setting and the other expansions that I simply moved all my space horror rpg projects to Hostile. If you like me felt even though Alien the RPG is a great game but lacks in depth not only I recommend this book that has everything for a very immersive space truckers experience. I see there was a lot of research in the merchant navy, aviation and oil industry which makes this book excelent source of inspiration even if one is not planning to run a space truckers game.
