Iron Edda: World of Metal and Bone

I own most of printed Apocalypse Engine books and this is the one I like the least.

The theme of the book is a Ragnarok of sorts where dwarves rise piloting giant metal monsters. Not bad. Mankind responds rising the bones of giants (and the wrath of the living giants!) to fight back. Cool. Even elves are said to start using treant like suits of armors. Fine.

But then the writer lost focus and and kept on investing much of the little page count talking about clans and foreigners... in case you wanted to play with a roman-ish or celtic-ish character. The evolution and development of starter stories to the central premise is a long shot.

We got used to quality with games PbtA: Urban Shadows, Dungeon World, Monster of the Week, Tremulus, Spirit of 77, Legacy, City of Judas, etc. This book is clearly a sign that people started churning out books just to join the fad, without much foresight or care.

For the price they ask we deserve much more.

The Gunner - A Dungeon World Playbook

Simply put, not interesting. Look for the (free) gunslinger playbook, for a cooler and more thematic option. Unless, of course, an organic weapon that can feed on your enemies for ammo is your cup of tea.

Creator Reply:
A lack of clarification makes this \"review\" essentially worthless, and I have no idea why you would direct people to a \"(free) gunslinger\" when this class is not a gunslinger.

By chapter: 1) Titles add names to Status levels, some interesting fluff, but without any gravitas.
2) Boons tells a lot, and says little. I am at least glad that the author didnt have his way to mechanize the whole concept with charts. 3) Kindred and Technology is what put me off the most, discussing at length how people who try to live a secret and nightly life can co-exist with modern technology. But authors failed to think of them as vampires, mystical creatures who may have intelligence and knowledge far surpassing our own. Failed to consider that today's safest secrecy method is NOT going digital at all - even written records should be considered a breach of masquerade. 4) A World of Darkness - briefly mentions a dozen or such locations. Good seeds, but way too little, and nothing innovative or surprising there.

Overview: Merits: a few titles and locations with potential. Flaws: Dry. Shallow. Unimaginative. Dropping names in examples is not an all solving tool for drama and mood.
