INFINITY RPG FREE Quickstart with Circular File Adventure

This is a great quick start product which gives you a good basic description of the Infinity world, clear and interesting simplified rules and an interesting introductory adventure. I always find rules in quick start products difficult to read through, but that wasn't the case here. I wasn't familiar with the 2D20 system but the mechanics seem good (and remind me of Pendragon in the core concept). The scenario had a nice premise and although I haven't played it read well and I certainly intend to.

The scenario is open about the fact that because it's a quickstart they've cut out the investigative part of the scenario and skipped to the action; this doesn't harm the adventure as it is, but having seen what was omitted (which was made available to Kickstarter backers as an update) I think it will be much better in it's complete form, especially if you're a fan of investigations. However, the sections contained in the quickstart look exciting and fun to play, and even if like me you don't know anything about Infinity really gives you a sense that the PCs are being put in the middle of something big from the outset.

The only very small issue I had with this was that the pre-generated characters took a bit of time to understand. The factions are explained, but not necessarily the sub-groups that these characters belong to. Possibly one or two sentences extra for each (and not from that character's perspective might have helped). For example, when I saw a character profile with 'Reverend Moira' at the top, I assumed that was the character's name, not her profession. If you know about Infinity (or can use a search engine as I did) it's not really a problem, but it would be worth doing a little research on each of the PC's backgrounds before running this if you don't already know. The PCs do look like a good and interesting group though, and the factional perspectives and sub missions are a really nice feature of this game.

It's also been very positive to see the updates that have been done to this product based on user feedback.

Overall, a product hasn't made me so excited about a game or setting for a long time. Normally I download free quick starts, skim them and then never go back to them. With this I've gone from not caring about Infinity to backing the Kickstarter for the RPG and looking very seriously at the miniatures game too.

Gasmask Gazetteer #1, Dhampiri of the Underground

This is a great introduction to UnMet, providing an interesting location on the fringes of society with encounters for your party. It's a good example of a 'vanilla' adventure location and opposition made interesting. I found it a useful jumping off point for my own ideas and a guide to getting started writing my own stuff. As an entry point into the underground it could easily lead to other things. At seven written pages this is also the perfect length for the GM-on-the-go to pick up and run.

I gave this a rating of four out of five because I felt the Waterloo Underground station could have been detailed a bit more - one or two memorable NPCs could have really raised this up. A map would also have been really useful. Ultimately though, there's enough here to provide a great short scenario and inspire you to build it into more if you want to.

Given that there's also nice new stunts and qualities for underground fighting and Dhampyr characters, this is a great little supplement.

Deathwatch: Game Master's Kit

In my opinion this is the best of the Warhammer 40K RPG GM Kits. The screen contains the most important charts and tables, weapon stats, a summary table of combat actions and rules reminders for different shooting types (automatic, overwatch etc.) and combat against Hordes.

The scenario is the high point of this kit. Without wanting to give things away, it gives the Kill-team a planet as their sandbox and the GM the freedom to run it at the pace and intensity he wishes. Like the best of this kind of scenario, it contains enough structure that the GM will feel comfortable with everything that's going on. The preview on Drivethru should give you a good idea whether this scenario will suit you or not. There's more to this than the scenario in the core rulebook, and it would make a good first scenario for a new Kill-team.

The scenario section also includes some information that it would have been nice to see in the main book - a few paragraphs on day to day life on Watchfortress Erioch and some illustrated NPCs from Erioch. These are the things that help me get a feel for a setting and I'm glad they fitted them in here.

The last section is about how to build good missions and importantly make them different from one another. This will be invaluable to less experienced GMs, but I don't think it hurts to have this kind of material and game-specific examples no matter how long you've ben running games. Given that we seem to have less time to come up with games as we get older, this sort of information is a real timesaver.

I wouldn't normally get a GM screen in PDF, the main reason I did here was because I plan to run Deathwatch online. I don't actually end up using most of the GMs screens I do have though, so that shouldn't really be a factor. I'd thoroughly recommend this product as a solid adventure and some good additional information to supplement the main book.
