Dystopia Rising Evolution: Larp Evolved

The book is a good update to the rules especially considering that the skills are not class base which has been an issue I have heard from some players. It has also stripped away a lot of the inherent prejudices that stem from real world equivalents. It puts the play of prejudice in the hands of the players, but does not make it solely in the realm of the game. It is difficult for some to jump into these LARPs because there are old school players that may not wish to teach the game, and thus they lose out on the game itself. There is also the issue that is stated as having no source material, well if they devoted themselves to fleshing out the world fully like the previous edition, a new player will have those basic ideas that may not be how the game has changed in an area. However, the book is a good reset for a game that has wanted to reset and keeping the old and putting in some new.

This is a phenomenal read whether you are looking for lore bits or just a journalesque novel. I enjoy Vampire the Masquerade and trying to remember everything that has happened is like trying to remember all of history, but this slips in alot of the metaplot along with new ideas or expansion on them. It is also a treasure trove for those true lore junkies that can go, "Hey isn't that... OH MY GOD IT IS."

This book is massive, but that is no surprise for trying to include the lore and information that a possible new player would need to start playing this game. However, there is something in here for older players that are used to the years of written material that this game has been active for. It has also allowed for new players to actually jump into these games without needing to know those years of material. The quick write up provide the feel for each clan and sect without it needing to be its own book.

Mind's Eye Theatre: Werewolf The Apocalypse

This was my first major experience to Werewolf the Apocalypse. I heard from previous players that it had most of its problematic features taken away and that this makes a lot of the issues between tribes and Feras less apparent. However, reading through it as a new player I still see where the conflicts can arise especially with the Fera being treated as essentially second class. Another complaint is that there is a war after they lost the war and this is unrealistic. I see it more as the true conflict, what happens when a civilization is dying do the people let it die or are they going to fight to survive. The complaint that the shrinking of gifts has been another complaint that I heard, but these are older players that are used to the vast number, this book is about 750pgs, and that is setting gifts, species all sorts of information to give a decent feel for the world and its characters. I was frieghtened by the page number and thickness, but I wanted to learn and read more because it is still interesting, older players who run these games can add in the old gifts if they want to, but for new players it works just fine.

Considering that most of the people that I know play this game are LARPers and few actually ever touch the tabletop I think that this book is a great way to try and bring those people to the table. It supplies enough information about the world and how it has changed because of the bombs and Zeds. I enjoy that it has used the Storypath system, but it does not feel as though it is a retread of other games. I am planning on running this game for Startplaying.games, and believe this will give players a fun post-apocalypse zombie game that addresses horror and survival without it being hand waved or too gritty.
