Vatermorder
Publisher: Gallant Knight Games
by Matt S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/31/2020 06:26:37

I just want to say that this is a wonderfully written and produced adventure, inspired by real world events, from the pen of the prolific Jim Pinto.

If you aren't familiar with his work, it's well worth your time to look into his back catalogue.

This has the feel of a British module from the 1980s, and reminds me so much of what brought me into the hobby to begin with.

Vatermorder is a framework to build on for those running it. The way in is narrow...ish, but the climax and the aftermath are up to you. Will you use one of the suggestions given, or create your own?

It could be a great opener for a campaign, or a surprising sidenote in an existing game.

Will the PCs be heroes in a simple open and shut case, that is wrapped up in a night? Will they fall foul of greater forces, and become its latest prey? Could they even become the villains in this affair, influenced by ancient forces?

Vatermorder is as much or as little as you need it to be.

Well worth the price of admission.

I ran this late last night, for an online group who haven't played with me for a long time, and they are now on the run from the local lord, after committing atrocities while in the throes of madness. It was a great experience, and one that we will be continuing. Vatermorder was a wonderful starting point for a dark adventure.

It's light, fast, and smooth.

Great way to get OSR heads to 5e, or get 5e heads to give the OSR a chance!

Have run it with 8 different groups, with players aged from 8 to 71, and all of them loved it.

Have only used it for one-shots so far, but we are going to try it with campaign play soon, and I'll report back on how that goes :)

It's better than you deserve, really.

It is, and you know it.

You know damn well that what is contained within the pages of this great work is far beyond anything you have the right to even look at.

Buy this!

Now!

No, really!

There's a deep, rich quality shining darkly in everything Glynn does, and this is no exception.

For fans of a certain kind of British humour, for fans of the OSR, and for fans of a grim world that can only come from the mind of someone who grew up on Charlie Says, Children of The Stones, and that creepy canal warning commercial, this is for you.

Mauvolg: Supplement II

You can tell a lot of time and a lot of love went into this. In a market overflowing with OSR books, retroclones, heartbreakers, and the rest, the Avremier books stand out thanks to that love and attention.

The style of the books is so evocative of the early days of the hobby, and the quality of the writing and production is very high. David Hill and co. have added plenty of new spin to old ideas, as well as adding some fresh concepts into the mix. Every area has been given a fresh lick of paint... monsters, classes, races, loot, mechanics, settings... and all these areas have been expanded on as well, so it's not just the simple touch-up job that a lot of OSR products think they can skate by with.

They do not stand on their own, and you will need access to 0e rules to use them, and I only mention that here as I feel it needs pointing out as so many OSR products are a self-contained system now, and something like this 5-book series might easily be mistaken for such.

There is an awful lot packed into these little books and they are easily worth their asking price, and I thoroughly recommend them for fans of the oldest school.

---Supplement II Notes---

Again, another fun and jam-packed volume ... spells, monsters, loot, races, and classes. The Horned Druid really stands out as a great creation, we see information added on materials used for item construction, and the world of Avremier gets a little deeper and darker with the lands of Mauvolg.

More new spells, magical items, and beasties, than you can wave a wand at. Information on the space ... as in outer space ... around the world of Avremier, which opens up a lot of possibilities for exploration and strangeness. The Arcanaflow systems changes up how magic works, and makes for fast and reactive casting.

New thief and ranger options are beautifully done and creative. Interesting reading on how Avremier clerics differ from your normal run of the mill OSR cleric. Tons of extra monsters and magic to enhance your oldest school experience.

---Supplement 0 Notes---

The Armiger is a very nice alternative to the traditional Paladin, with its powers coming from heraldic beasts as opposed to deities, and with each beast granting an immunity, a bonus to attack a specific type of creature, and a Heraldic Manifestation (A spell-like power with limited daily uses)

Tons of new magical items, spells, gods, and more...!
