Come for the Reaping

When I first started this campaign, my original promise was to deliver a game filled with zombies. It took nearly 40 sessions to finally deliver on that promise.

I combined this scenario with Delta Green: Countdown's Dead Letter. My primary issue with Dead Letter was that it provided a host of details without a clear plot to follow. It's entirely possible to conduct a raid without encountering any zombies whatsoever (a crying shame!) or the Karotechia. So I of course manipulated the plot to ensure both Reinhard Galt, the Neo-Nazi cannibal, released the Sapphire pathogen just as the agents arrived, ensuring zombies of all types.

I used the mansion (along with its secret lab) from Come for the Reaping to flesh out the one in Dead Letter, which wasn't nearly as detailed. The placement of the zombies, their attire, and what key cards worked in what location were invaluable.

What I didn't plan on was the forethought of the players, who so energized the plot with their role-playing that they convinced Fiona Lin-Wei, an irritating hippy activist and one-note NPC, into a full-blown radical eco-terrorist. She became far more important than I ever imagined, and suddenly the entire campaign revolved around her: Hammer's relationship with her, Archive's Elder Sign, and the very future itself.

The only thing more shocking thing than delightful turn of events was how close this scenario mirrored the plot of the new Terminator movie. We all went to see it afterwards, and the similarities are eerie: the protagonist meets an exotic woman of mixed Asian/European descent and teams up with her, special forces raid a processing plant, encounter mindless humanoid killing machines, and finally a heavily accented and indestructible Austrian stalks our hero through a dangerous industrial site.

A decent adventure, and one to satisfy the Resident Evil fans among your players. Settings and NPCs are given very detailed descriptions (even down to the nature of the fatal injuries suffered by the zombies), and the maps by Christopher West are smashing, as are all his work. It introduces the sinister Ogdoad Research company, whose machinations feature heavily in the Bronze Head campaign, also from The Game Mechanics, so it wil serve well as an introductory adventure if you plan to run that series as well.

While it's suggested as being geared for 1st-level characters, I'd use it for those a level or two higher, as the zombies keep getting back up until the fiend that spawned them is dealt with, and I wouldn't throw an infinite wave of zombies at a 1st-level party.

While the cover says it's for Urban Arcana, and I'm sure you could use it in that setting, there isn't a lot of overt magic to prevent it from fitting seamlessly into a Dark*Matter or Shadow Chasers campaign, as I plan to do.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
5 out of 5 people bought it and loved it. I suppose that makes me an oddball and a curmudgeon, then. It's atmospheric, and for what it is it's well written and varied, but the scenario is crashingly obvious and the creatures don't offer much that's genuinely creepy. The main bad guy has claws, and it turns its victims into zombies. ?? So did the nabassu from the 1e MMII, and it at least did it in a weird, thought-provoking and entertainingly badly described way. The authors seem to have piled on the graphic descriptions to compensate.

DISLIKED: Apart from anything else, the library.

QUALITY: Disappointing

VALUE: Satisfied
This is a great adventure. It's pure fun running through the building and dealing with the problems at hand. The adventure pretty tough so 1st level characters need to find a clever tactic to make it.

The environment and the opponents are very detailed, the background provided is excellent and there's more than enough to discover for the heroes.

LIKED: Just about everything. It's close to perfect. My group had quite a lot of fun in this adventure.

DISLIKED: I would have preferred if a "read aloud" description would have been provided for each room / encounter, but that's really just a minor thing.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
This is a great d20 Modern adventure. If you like Resident Evil, All Flesh Must be Eaten, or Zombies! you will love this. Oh, and it introduced initiative cards, which I use to this day in my current D&D campaign. I would definitedly buy more adventures by Rich Redman.

LIKED: This is a solid site-based adventure with seeds to set up a modern campaign. Also, the Game Mechanics website has additional support information for running it in psionic campaigns.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
A very well done "creepy, horror" type adventure. This is a great, shock your players adventure for those running a more horror investigative game (like me). The level of combat is turned up a notch more than I normaly run. It was a pleasant (for me) suprise that caught my players off gaurd. I recomend this heartedly!

This is a very interesting adventure with a Resident Evil feel. There is a great deal of background information and attention to detail. This would be a great module to use as an introduction to D20 Modern.

A really great openning adventure for the new d20 Modern(tm) GM. Easy to scale. 32 Pages. Has great bookmarks (thank you!). Great layout and art.

The Game Mechanics offer superior products, IMO. A great buy at twice the price.

A wonderful spooky premise (that is almost cliched by now with all of the survival horror action games on the market) that begs to be run. The adventure is well organized, and I expect that it will be a lot of fun!

Was a fun game. I think my players enjoyed it a lot. I would have a preferred more block text descriptions that are read to the players. Despite, or possibly due to, having GM'd for longer than I remember, I find my descriptions often end up being very dry or repetative.

The best .pdf modules I've ever read. I would love to see more adventures, both fantasy and modern of this caliber in .pdf form. The challenges in Come for the Reaping are tough but doable for a 1st-level party, and the descriptions are easily read aloud to the players (no flowery text that sounds better in print than aloud).

Solid adventure, with some real neat details. Could be pretty harsh on 1rst level characters, I think, but that fits the genre, I suppose.

The initial hook presupposes that the character belong to an investigative agency, which may not suit all GMs. However, exit hooks really shine, and this could be the beginning of a swell modern horror/conspiracy campaign.
